Tips against mermaids.

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, basically I need some tips against those ugly super flexible things from sea.

I usually play 1000 points list with my store buddy.

Scenario: Capture the station, attacker. My first list was focused on lot of wings and heavy power.. So I got into range bad 2. Dropped cloakes (The situation for doing so was ideal, my opponent wasn't in good formation and I've got wings prepared and ideal range too.), attacked with wings.. and.. did almost nothing and received heavy casaulties at turn 3. fuuu. The game ended then due to time pressure.

  • Frigate Squadron (80pts)
    • Widow Squadron (80pts)

4x Widow (80pts) (System Network, Difficult Target)

After that terrible lose, I decided to go for boarding list and make them pay. It was so naive really.

      • Interceptor Token (10pts)

        2x Interceptor (10pts)

Idea here was to stay cloaked and use my mines and boarding to my advantage.

So, we played Capture the station again I was defender yay. I did not dropped cloakes this game. At turn 1 I put together 2 nidus squads through card and sit on objective. My raptors + araneas received 3x6 mines due to minefield MAR and lost 4HP in total.  His escort went 21" thanks to planet and card and triggered my own mine next to my 2 squads..fuu. That was the most terrible moment in the game. I will never underestimate them again. I unfortunatelly received a lot of damage even with cloaks. I did boarding parties everywhere but results weren't as good as I expected (aranea 15AD, huntsman 15AD, raptors 2x14AD with assault blitz). I did kill some ships with my own mines. woo. At turn 4, the game escalated quickly (mines, mines, mines, energy transfer) and at turn 6 I had one last heavy cruiser alive.

Aquans have mines everywhere and I'm not able to avoid every one of them.. even the weakest mine (6) gave critical to my huntsman and aranea.. Is it just lucky dice rolling? It seems wrong. I'm not used to losing so I cant put up with Aquans hammering me all the time. I would really appreciate some advice. I tried to focus on our strong points: wings, boarding, few mines, but it's not enough.. I'm really frustrated that nothing works well for me.

My opponent plays a lot of interceptors. My wings can't break through and torpedoes either (i usually play it that way too). So he is basically able to win without challenge just with his shooting systems and mines. I must be doing something terrible wrong. I'm not willing to believe aquans are so strong..

I would appreciate some help, thanks.

What does your typical Aquan player use against you? I have some pretty good experience playing spiders against mermaids so I hope I can give some decent advice but it would help to know what their typical list is. I have a roughly 50/50 success rate playing both as and against in that matchup.

Zak

First game he had carrier with 2 heavy cruiser, 4 cruisers, 3 destroyers, and 2x4 frigates.

In second game he had 2 BB one with escorts second with corvets,  3 corvets ,  4 frigates and 4 cruisers

I mostly hate cruisers.. they are so fast and burn me a lot..

I'm struggling with cloaks.. maybe I should have decloaked in second game.. not sure though.

There's one thing I'm sure about though, I don't want to lose 3 games in a row.  (My queen is very unpleased, but my admirals were lucky and died in both battles).

        2x Interceptor (10pts)

Idea here was to stay cloaked and use my mines and boarding to my advantage.

I think in this list I would drop the Huntsman and the Nidus and go with Venoms and full units of Widows. The Huntsman are very slow at 7" and while they are tough they will get left behind, where the Arianae can shunt and the Venoms have ambush. I might even swap out the shunt cruisers for another unit of Assassins for mines.

So, we played Capture the station again I was defender yay. I did not dropped cloakes this game. At turn 1 I put together 2 nidus squads through card and sit on objective. I mixed my responses in with bold red text into your quote.

Tactically focus on his cruisers first. The mine runs are brutal. Use 6 wing fighters from your battleship and 6 wing bombers from your carrier then follow that up with the 4 wing bombers from your Nidus and finally use the fixed fore guns on the Nidus on whatever is left. Kill one cruiser before moving on to the next. Mines stay full strength until you take out a ship.

If you are playing the other list, your Assassins can also do the mine flybys I recommend doing that often. Use your widows to focus on the heavy ships and cruisers while using your Assassins to take out any flanking smalls. It is counter intuitive but the Assassins mine flyby will kill and entire unit of smalls, where a battleship has a tough time with a swarm of frigates. Just watch out for your opponents cruisers. Focus on them with the Venoms, Raptors, Huntsman, or Aranae depending what is in your list.

I've personally been finding that our cruisers are too easy to deal with and our smalls die fast the moment Stealth is breached.

I've been having good success with shunt entry of frigates and use heavy cruisers to smash their way in to enemy lines.

If a ship has self repair I drop cloak the moment I'm in range and rely on self repair to keep the ships going.

How are you dealing with Aquan ET aft and mines Steve?

Thanks for advice both Steve and Noon, I will reconsider changes in my lists. Are you using battle stations? She seems handy to me. I would have shunt her in the middle with our shunting card. But I'm the only one in our gaming group who own's BS so I haven't used her yet, it seems unfair.. but then again.. I won't cuddle with Aquans no more.

I make sure to target priority the faster mine layers. I focus fire a ship until it's destroyed totally as that's the only way to reduce mine effectiveness.

Ba'kash allies are great if you are having issues with difficult targets. With their scatter weapons you always hit on 4's at range band 2. Plus they allow you to take Relthozan only tac cards.

I seem to be a bit on the outside for cruiser tactics. Many people love them, but they always die too quickly in my games. It's why I like the heavies.

The battle station can be great and you should use her. Fighters give her extra range over bombers - and you can guarantee that they will stay away if she has bombers.

I think we had a huge row over the cruisers in the tier 2 discussion. I find they work well in a fast list. As for frigates dying, yeah if they are killing frigates then they are't focusing on your battleship. Widows used to be pointless to take, but now with dr 4 they are brutes. The Nidus are finicky but they have range. I never put my Frigates in reserve, but I might if I play a different type of list over the swarm or shunt style I am playing now.

Haha. Exactly why I said my opinions differ. Try out both Allegro and come to your own conclusions. Usually better that way anyway. One of our tactics may work better against your opponent than the other.

I try to saturate the board with as many of the hardest to kill ships as I can bring. As we are only effective with direct fire in range band 2, I make sure my ships will arrive and will be scary.

I like the Mv bonus tac due to the 7" on the heavy cruiser. Something to keep in mind. Use grav slingshots lots too.

Thanks guys! I will try everything to beat those little blue clams. I hope I will kick their ass (fins) in planetfall. There's no way that moving aquarium could beat my K’ss’ark warriors.

The biggest problem I've had against Aquans are those blasted Difficult Target cruisers. Wings can deal with them if you can get them there, but a few interceptors nicely counter anything wing based. I think Ba'Kash allies might be the answer as they bring scatter weapons that can ignore difficult target and they have enough firepower to deal with cruisers.

Just add in some Ba'Kash cruisers and you'll be fine, they are pretty ridiculous. My FLGS is of the opinion that there are next to no Ba'Kash players because of the lack complaining about them. :)

i want to be a ba'kash player, i just didn't feel like bringing a proxy for the battle carrier and am waiting for a model, our group hardly ever plays games smaller then 1000pts so they got shelved for now

I will add Ba'kash when they get redesign and if the price will drop.

I was thinking at night about this list. What you guys think? I remembered that I had played against aquans once in 2v2 and I had had real success with 2 BB, so I'm gonna give them try in 1v1.

         Tier 1 (530pts)
  • Battleship (265pts)
    • Nexus (265pts)

      Self Repair, System Network

+2 PD (5pts), +3 Wing Capacity (5pts), Stealth Systems MAR (15pts) (Stealth Systems)

      • Drone/Widow Accompaniment (40pts)

        2x Drone/Widow (40pts) (Difficult Target, System Network)

      • Fighter Token (30pts)

        6x Fighter (30pts)

  • Battleship (265pts)
    • Nexus (265pts)

      Self Repair, System Network

+2 PD (5pts), +3 Wing Capacity (5pts), Stealth Systems MAR (15pts) (Stealth Systems)

      • Drone/Widow Accompaniment (40pts)

        2x Drone/Widow (40pts) (Difficult Target, System Network)

      • Fighter Token (30pts)

        6x Fighter (30pts)

Tier 2 (170pts)
  • Shunt Cruiser Squadron (170pts)
    • Araneae Squadron (170pts)
      • 3x Araneae (165pts)

        Stealth Systems

3x Shunt Matrix (8) (Shunt Matrix)

      • Interceptor Token (5pts)

        Interceptor (5pts)

Tier 3 (300pts)
  • Frigate Squadron (100pts)
    • Nidus Squadron (100pts)

4x Nidus (80pts) (Difficult Target, System Network)

      • Bomber Token (20pts)

        4x Bomber (20pts)

  • Frigate Squadron (100pts)
    • Nidus Squadron (100pts)

4x Nidus (80pts) (Difficult Target, System Network)

      • Bomber Token (20pts)

        4x Bomber (20pts)

  • Frigate Squadron (100pts)
    • Nidus Squadron (100pts)

4x Nidus (80pts) (Difficult Target, System Network)

      • Bomber Token (20pts)

        4x Bomber (20pts)

The idea here is:
Two BB should cooperate to bring down larger targets. (BB, Manta, Heavy cruisers etc.)
Three nidus squads should focus on Aquans small and regular cruisers (they hopefully hunt them down).
Little cute araneas should just harass my opponent and they should pretend to be important to make themself being fire magnet (players in our gaming group hates them). And if they get lucky I will shunt them and board some weakened important ship.

I really hope my wings will do some nuts. nom nom nom nom.

I will try to benefit from fighters longer distance and bombers with splith berth. That should drive my opponent crazy.

I can't share deployment idea and few others things just in case my opponent is reading this (hello) because he have account here.

Please give me some hints if this is the right direction to break them down. Thanks.
