Hail father Dagon!

Recommended Posts

Can't wait to get my hands on some of the new models. I too just recently bought 2 gunships though, so I may wait to pick up the spatha set. I like how the escorts are being bundled with the dreadnought, I don't own any retarius/bucklers and I don't own a dreadnought yet so I think my next buy will have to be the dreadnought set.

Am I the only one who wants to put the Aquan dread on the table and say:  "Unleash the Kraken!"  :D

I for one want a Dagon, I'll field it as a battlecarrier, I have a Manta as well.  I'll probably field that as a fleet carrier instead.  It just looks like it's full of strikecraft ready to launch.  The Dagon looks more like it's going to frak you up one side and down the other.

I wouldn't mind if the Dagon had more of the Manta in its design, especially the broad 'head', but I also think that the difference between the Maelstrom and Dagon are large enough. A given addition to the fleet (I would have bought it on name alone...), and it saves me from converting the Manta to fit in with the mk2/mk3 designs.

Not sure about the Kraken, a cool name is not enough, not when I have a Medusa incoming.... Goodlooking shipping, though.

If I had the spare cash, I would field an Aquan fleet, just to to announce it with an accent.

Am I the only one who thinks the Dagon looks too much like the maelstrom? I mean, I love the new styling for Aquans, but the Dagon looks much more like a variant battleship than a battle carrier.

That's why the Mk.1 Aquan ships got it right.

Bring me my poo-stick!!!

I just bought two frigging Gladius gunships too!!! ARGH! Wonder if they'll get a small change in rules, ala Nausicaa/Praetorian?

THESE LOOK SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!! I hate you Spartan and my wallet hates you too. Sigh. Looks like I'll be ordering a box of Spatha's!

The fleet books will be awesome and my Aquan and Lizard friends will be very happy as they got some great resculpts!

Yep, I've had my Pair of Gladius gunships for almost six days now and then this drops. Oh well, the two older model ones will just Ben my Carrier accompaniments and the new sculpts will be their own squadron. Love it.

They are pretty damn similar. I think the Dagon would be well served if it were tapered a bit more in the back like the Manta.

What say ye all?

Zak

Tough to say on those views.  The Maelstrom is fairly flattish on the top.  If the Dagon centerline crest is significantly higher I think it will be fine.  Can't really tell from a 3/4 view like that though.

And guys, we are missing the bigger picture here:

Spartan Games is saving us money!!!

How, you ask?

By releasing 2 fleet manuals, each having 3 Core fleets and the allied Alliance ships (Kurak and Zenian), you have the luxury of having more ships and stats but spending less money buying each fleet separately!!!

Yes, you are SAVING money! :D

Though the Zenian manual costs $20 more, so please only buy the Kurak Alliance fleet manual!

:D

(See?! I just saved you more money) :o

:D

Now i have a problem. I love the old Shunt cruisers but never got around to buy them because i got other stuff. Ive to say the Bane outclasses the new one in design. The new one just looks like a flat disc with stuff added on the edges. No clear lines. The Bane had a shape it had a character.

As much as the new Bombard took over the old idea the new Shunt cruiser lost its. Im sorry if i have to say this but the Relthoza desinger doesnt seem to have a vision of where they should go right now.

Maybe i dont do the model justice but from the renders im disappointed as a Relthozan commander.

Really? The Bane to me was distinctive but always looked like it was a prototype, rather than a refined design. Now the Relthoza have got to grips with the battle-shunt tech day to day, they've standardised into a production ship. The new shunt cruiser has much in common with the new Relthoza ships, but still has nods to the old design (the shunt matrix are, for instance). Look at the fleet as it's developing as a whole - it has more of a synchronised look than ever before.

Same for the new Aquan Battlecarrier - people have been asking for Aquan ships that looked aligned for years, now they're too similar. Cmon guys, make your minds up!!!

I can explain it to myself with fluff but that doesnt help me in liking the model.

The old model was a bit plain in todays standard but it was distinct. It said "this is a special model of this faction" the toy of toys. Gameplay wise it still is, even though there are two other models with shunt drives.

The thing is i only like part of the new Relthozan style and this seems to be the worse rather than the best. E.g. the new cruiser is fantastic, most smalls are great as well. The new BB is to large, the carrier to flat and the battlecruiser has the same undistict form than the shunt cruiser got now only horizontally.

The best Relthozan ships are still the Apex, Bane, new normal cruiser, the Nidus (yes its flat but it has a damn interesting shape and its somewhat of a special vessel) and the new frigates. Maybe i forgot something.

I totally agree to that. The difference to the normal cruiser is just too tiny. Thats why i will stick to the old heavy cruisers, which btw i think are a good example of merging the horizontal with the vertical design. The lower hull maybe couldve been longer to make it more of a T (B-Wing approach) and more visible.

There's a difference between following the same style cues and looking the same. the maelstrom and Isonade have the same style cues for instance, with the same series of mutually inset shell like protrusions, but don't look the same, even if the Isonade was scaled up to match the maelstrom in size.

The Dagon looks very much like an alternate take on the maelstrom. Hell they look closer than the Apollo and the Tyrant, and they're both battleships from the same fleet.

As a counterpoint, the three quarters render of Aquan ships in particular are often misleading, and the Maelstrom is a lot more bulky than it's render on display in the shop suggests. There might be a lot more hight difference between the Maelstrom and Dagon that might not be obvious from the singe shot we have at the moment. Also, the manta/Dagon are hybrid carriers/battleships, so baring a resemblance to the same race pure battleship is understandable.

there's no denying though that the Manta stood out much more as a unique design from it's contemporaries than the Dagon does, and it's that that some people are pointing out, and not the silly strawman you're expounding.
