What are your thoughts on the new 2.5 Italian ORBAT? I'm not a big fan of the Entropy Generator, I hope they get something cool to compensate.

How is the loss of the calcification generator such an issue? We only had two units with in the first place, so if you were basing your strategy around that one thing, you were seriously limiting yourself.

We had 3, Mars, Minerva and Pilum. It was that it had calc on a node projector, and entropy on a node isn't as powerful or useful, in my opinion. I understand that some of these changes aren't final, but let's say i'm not super-impressed by the 2.5 ORBAT.

1 to 3 Calc generators are a big difference to any number of Entropy Generators.  Which are not worth any extra point costs. It represents a major nerf to the LoIS.

The ORBATS were supposed to address this. Or are we assuming the latest ORBATS are as temporary as the Majors and more changes are coming?

They REALLY need to get ahead of this. Its getting serious.

We can use inventive on nodes now, unless I'm missing something, but risky with the change to inventive however. That's probably the biggest hit to the Italians, not the loss of the calcification gen. The new entropy gen has nice harassment potential on nodes, swamping squadrons in corrosives is a cool ability, especially considering the Minerva already has great guns, it's still a fine unit. The mkii blimp is pretty pants now however.

I will concede the Mars Calcification gen - didn't notice that option before, but is it really comparable to the node-launched versions? (see below)

That said, I'm still at a bit of a loss as to why losing the calcification generators is such an issue. My understanding of the rules for them was they were basically Shredded Defenses proc - but, how is losing that such a big issue for the Italians?

Defensive fire? The only unit that can fire  Torps beyond RB2 is the Fortuna, and no Italian unit has rockets. Torpedoes are, in some respect, a close defense weapon, and received a major buff in 2.5 with the Barrage Loadout. Plus, to use them effectively with that sort of synergy, you need the node launcher - the standard generator (like the one on the Mars) is literally point blank only.

Boarding? Really? The Italian style of play is long-ranged hit and run. Sure, you might be able to prize a severely damaged ship, but Italian boarding parties are very small - and trust this Covenant player, you don't want to waste your troops like that unless its already a sure thing. And playing the boarding exchange game, those same small parties will not win the long run, if your ships don't blow up from short-ranged fire in the first place.

The way I see it, the Entropy Generator is probably a good exchange. Whilst you lose the Shredded Defenses, Corrosion is actually one of the more scary effects in the game - I think that's why @SirEmilCrane sees the Inventive Sci change as a risk (again, coming from a Covenant player, you learn to take those risks in your stride - its a 1-in-12 chance of happening.).

I just don't see the loss of the Calcification Gen as big deal - if anything, I feel the Entropy Gen actually has more of a synergy with the Italian gameplay style.

The removal of Calc Gens is a big deal. Your boarding attempts go much smoother with no ack ack. Besides, they are an allied power, I take them with PE to put that big AoE of shredded defenses out there and then make easy boarding attempts. Corrosion can be repaired, and does HP, leaving the AP intact. There is more than one way to play a faction/ally.

Ah, this is probably the reason for our varying opinions - I like my Italians as a core force, and would therefore use them differently.

As a core force, this changes their play-style, as an allied option, it limits my enthusiasm.

Well you couldn't use the Battlecruiser as an allied option now anyway. Can't ally anything with a Strategic Value anymore.

 

There was still the Pilum, but that's an expensive way to get a node Calcification Generator.

The potential to have a PE force with an old school calcification+node capability is itself reason to make a change....for the sake of game balance. 

 

I have to wait and and see how things play out with the new gen. I am not yet looking at Italy and thinking the are gimped. We shall see.....there is also the fact real dialed in orbats have yet to be seen....I don't think huge buffing up is needed, but maybe some minor adjustments on points or capability.

So the good old gladius is now non-capital ( I think that's a recent change - been a while since I had my Italians out)

what do people think about that? I'll be sad to see the loss of the isolated systems for them, but this will make them effective at hunting smalls, and will keep them from being prized, so overall a good thing maybe?

I think, the loss of calc. gen is big deal. Italy IS boarding nation. (Pillum 15 AP, Gladius 15 AP, Scutum 5 AP + terror tactics), Elite marines everywhere, that was my playing style at least.

Our sky fortress is stronger now... I think, that Ballistae is one of the best sky fortresses in the game, and they make it even stronger. 2x4 wings (instead of 6 carrier point), and Area bombardment!

Specifically with the Italians? Not an option at this point - they only have access to naval and aerial forces. And their Landing field doesn't have an option for infantry support.

The only option you have is to get some allies - specifically bunkers which allow you to include infantry support.
