Well said but you have made a great point about target priority:
 5+ to hit

Shoot the little ones with capitals. They are hitting on 5's anyway and are wasted if hiding behind the lumbering capital class resturants of sonic doom.

Vanguards are ace for this too. They are great against slower factions and will happily munch through CF smalls and do some damage to mediums; your torps will be hitting on 6's anyway cos you will be submerged for the first 2 turns of the game!

Flanking is great idea with our Attackers having better p/s weaponry. Attackers and Orions love the Bastions, send them down a flank swan style and get that gunnery in.

P.S. The first Britannian gentleman to moan abou the Vanguard is demoted to scrubbing the deck. They are cheap and good at what they do (be a massive pain in the arse that the enemy cannot ignore!).

I have just purchased the CF box set and can already see some weaknesses. They are balanced and even the drednought is far from indistructable. They are also slow and ultimately Dystopian is a game of movement and positioning. Love the bomber too; sheaf fire for the win!!

CF could get utterly deadly when you take into account their major allies. The EoBS have some fast and hard hitting options with scary high AP (WITHOUT conscripted crew). Blazing sun Air would compliment the CF very well!

I immediately bought a EotBS naval box and some Ika after my CF order. I was thinking the exact same thing, plus I'll paint them as the fugitive 'Wani' ships to scare my opponant. They're gonna have big blue 'Oni' masques on the side.

The KoB really struggle against a careful Chinese deployment.

With so much of the long range firepower being torpedoes, you're stuck shooting the bastions ( skimmers 5+ to hit) or the stuff behind the bastions , 5+ to hit.

The Chineese also only hit on 5+ whwen firing through the Bastions. This means that Hoods can take out the Bastions unpunished at range. Experienced engineers take away much from the Chineese weapons.

I've noticed something a bit odd. Those support carriers bring 4 TFTs each, yet the CF Naval Support set only has 4 tokens despite having 2 support cruisers.

Another fellow on these forums noticed that the Dreadnought only comes with 4TFTs when the rules state that it supports 6. Its very unalike Spartan to not include the correct number of tokens, and annoying if you want to use those models you're now missing.

Played my first game for fun last night 1250pts vs a mishmash of Australians (with their insane destructive ordnance) and Italians.

My observations are thus;

  • Vs experienced engineers your dragon breath weapons are considerably blunted.
  • Sonic weaponry is excellent due to the concussive barage.
  • Rugged construction. Irritating for your oponent and easy to forget, keep reminding him, psychological warfare. :)
  • The mini bastions die very very quickly, they are essentially a 120 point throwaway cloud generator. IMO they need to benefit from the generator themselves, they are just too much of an obvious RB4 1st round kill.
  • The dreadnought is BIG, and tough. I used it to collide with 2 pocket battleships that were closing to board. The battleships took about 19 hits each, the dread took no damage. this then resulted on the battleships being on half AD and the dreadnought full. With impervious they shrugged of the boarding.
  • Impervious is awesome, and together with security posts, well my oponent was throwing a wobbly.
  • The little carriers are suprisingly good at shooting.
  • The battlecruiser is great with 3 turrets.
  • The cruisers are very squishy, but are awesome at boarding with 8AP.
  • The flyers are a must have in packs of three for sheaf fire, keep them obscured untill you get a shot on all those tiny tokens or frigates.
  • IMO they need a little more AD for the cruisers, comapre them poitns for poitns vs RC cruisers, you will see what i mean.

My next game is 800pts, i envisage a totally diferent game, as no deadnought.

How were you managing to drop the bastions so easily at RB4? Energy turret Australians? DR5, CR 6, 5 hull points and rugged construction is tough for a medium!

Jade armour also gives a good chance of ignoring inconvenient teleport, magazine explosions or generator offlines crits.

EDIT : (Assuming Energy turrets) A pocket battleship can link turrets for 10AD. Rugged construction drops this to 9 AD, giving 7.2 as your expected successes- a crit

The sub tenders can link for 9 AD, down to 8 for rugged, and so giving an expected 6.4 hits- just a crit

Looks like you'd want two pocket battleships and a pair of sub tenders( 440 pts  before escorts) just to kill one bastion at RB4.  If you have three of the bastions in a unit, you can lose one and then just reform the line

I last tried a KOB fleet against the Chinese and found that a Battleship, destroyers  and Hoods were not up to the job of smashing a bastion at RB4- it may have just been my dice that game though....

I continue to be surprised at the extents to which people are willing to throw firepower at a bastion in order to drop that shield, especially when I have something like a cruiser squadron behind the shield that they would be much better off trying to sink directly, shield or no shield.

The objective of the bastion is to shelter a priority unit until it can get into range to give somebody the business.  Whether it does this by protecting them behind a shield or by drawing fire, either way, the payload is getting delivered.

I'm not.

The 5+ to hit makes the already difficult to damage mediums that bit harder, and if the Chinese player is smart, you won't have any LOS at all to the smalls which you'd be hitting on 5s as most long range firepower is from capitals...

I've found myself shooting at the bastions to get rid of the rockets, flamethowers and AP. Breaking the shield wall is just a bonus...

Those things do seem to be armed to the teeth...

At least the Reivers hey are better than my crappy Nakatsus^^.

I hear Ice creaking   :P

While the 5'6 to hit is annoying, the 6s still explode! Also us poor chaps with a lot of torpedos have little choice!

I picked up the Chinese Federation starter and support boxes today. The detail on the models are very good, and I'm happy with my purchase. However the floating bastions have a metal 'bracket' that goes between the top and bottom resin halves, and these brackets came slightly wonky so as to make it a big fuss bending and trimming it to accommodate the resin pieces properly. Each rocket launcher on the bastions come as a seperate metal part on a sprue, which needs to be clipped off and carefully trimmed so that it fits the angular base that it sits on. These bastions are a surprising amount of work. Nice models though.

Hmmm I did toss an eye on the Chinese rules (since I'm shared between ottomans and them), is that me or Chinese are Medium class heavy fleet? if so I feel like I'm gonna go on them :)

well, destroyers sure looks great, actually everything looks gorgeous both stat and model speaking *_*

Plus mediums are my workhorse when I play so Chinese seems to be good for me eh :)

One of the big reasons i got the Chinese was because they are a medium heavy fleet and had enough options to have list variations.

Destroyers are real nice, first game i put 6 raging fire and 4 corrosive on a magenta in one go.  :D

The Battlecruiser is also a bit of a monster, i found myself using the turrets more individually then linking. Shooting first at the smalls to prep them for boarding by my own smalls and then shifting to the bigger stuff. Getting a crit was just a bonus.

Going to give the Bastions a go over the battlecruiser next game

And the ships look better in person then they do on the pics.  :)

Agreed. From the pictures, I really wasn't keen on them at all, but the actual models when you see them look rather nice. I am not getting a fourth fleet.....I am not getting a forth fleet...yet

The destroyers are lethal. You really want to kill one before they engage. It stops them dropping two CR hits on a unit of mediums, and really crippling a medium squadron.

Has anyone played against Prussians yet? There was some speculation that China would murder Prussian fleets with all the AP killing gunnery from sonic weapons, flamethrowers and incendiary rockets; in addition to our own high AP and general kinda-toughness.
