Dystopian Wars Playtester Thread

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

I'm Delboy, the Senior [senior] Playtester/Designer for the Dystopian Wars Game at present.

.....no jokes about my age please...... ;)

Quite a few members have asked if it is possible to have us (ie the testers) comment on vessels that we have designed and tested.

Its a good idea, but as with anything that is governed by the legality of our Non-Disclosure Agreements, I think its sensible to lay down a few ground rules. This should allow everyone to focus their questions into ones we CAN answer and help remind everyone covered by their personal NDAs where the line is drawn.

Remember Spartan have final say on any copy/comment NDA'd members post, so if this thread gets out of hand they are entitled to shut it down and take action against any NDA'd person who steps over the line.

We CAN talk about :
1 - How the model plays and our experiences during the stages of playtesting.
2 - The concept of a model's use on the tabletop and possible game tactics.
3 - Synergy with existing models.
4 - Models that are headlined in the Spartan Blog or if clearance is given to the Tester to comment by Spartan.

Remember we ain't here to steal Spartan's Thunder, only to tell everyone how loud it is!

Also, folks should realise that the playtesters do not WORK for Spartan, and present their thoughts as un-paid, private individuals who have a vested emotional involvement with the D-Wars Game. That said, they are protected by Spartan from any aggressive, overly negative posters who may see this as an opportunity to make themselves heard. If everyone remains focused and adult during the thread, follows the rules of the forum and directs their comment in a mature non-accusatory fashion, there will be no problems. :)

So given these criteria, here are my mutterings about.......

So to get things rolling, here are some things about our testing of the Fresnel and Annonnax.

http://www.spartanga...he-frozen-south

The Covenant of Antarctica and the Energy Turret.

Its an issue that has been commented on thoroughly over the piece, so I won't drag it up here. Suffice it to say most players poo-poo'ed it as a poor substitute for standard AD from the normal turrets (to put it mildly!)

So, how do you go about making the Energy Turrets (ETs) worth taking? How far are we willing to go in design and testing before it becomes overpowered and silly? ....Too far obviously ;) .... and then we rein it in a bit and see what we have got!

We started by looking at the bigger issues surrounding the relatively low AD of energy turrets across the fleet. Suggestions were made regarding possible 'fleet-wide' changes, but given the nature of 'fixes' that Spartan (sensibly IMO) prefer to move towards, a new vessel type and generator mechanic was considered to be the best fit.

So the Fresnel was born!

The blog does a good job talking about the generator on-board, with its lens-focus capability. Its basically a big magnifying glass that stores all the energy from a squadron and blatts its intended target!

During testing, this vessel was fraught with problems, most of them in-game mechanic-based.

The question "Just how much AD should this vessel allocate to a target?" ..came up more than once!

But in gameplay another problem arose - that of Squadron Worthiness....."if it helps focus energy weapons, why would anyone take it in a squadron on its own?"

We ironed this out by working through all sorts of possible MARs like 'Slow to Fire' and 'Pinpoint Fire', but in the end settled on a simple solution of giving it a bloomin' big gun....or generator. (If in doubt, stick a big gun on it! British Army Vehicle Design maxim)

This has led to a good vessel for the points capable of operating as a MkI or MkII depending on the player's preferred battlefield role.

All in all its pretty solid.

And now on to the Annonnax!

First off, well done Spartan in designing yet another mega-model that captures the weird and wonderful universe with all its mad-science and crazy invention! Give the designer a day off, he deserves it!

So, how does it play? Brutal!...that's how!

I'm sure everyone had guessed by now that it has a Particle Accelerator in its maw....and its also a submersible!.... So expect to approach the enemy with stealth and then fire once surfaced with all the usual 'miss and carry on' shenanigans!

One of the interesting tactical conundrums that the Annonnax provides is if you want to use the PA at all! The temptation to tear into a ship with the assault maw is often a big one....and I know there are a few times I've succumbed and decided to board a Dreadnought rather than PA it!

Finally, there is the issue of a submarine that can go on land. The point was made that it might be able to stay submerged on Land and Sea, but that threw up a lot of 'space and height issues' so we moved towards a Land Capable idea that now seems to work very well. This makes the Annonnax very flexible and an absolute terror in Amphibious Landing games!

Cheers, and.....any questions?

Delboy.

Specifically the Hood  hehehe

We know it's focused on gunnery attacks (lack of tubes pretty evident), but is it the usual rb1-2 that is in the rest of the fleet, or is there something different in store (ie, longer range, or some ability that gives it an advantage at range*)?

*Not asking for specifics, just general mechanics; ie, there is something that gives an advantage, or there is not

Sorry folks, but I've taken the Konigsberg notes down for the moment until Spartan get a chance to do a Blog on it!

Shoulda read me own roolz

I've replaced it with a quick set of notes on the CoA vessels that are coming out, as Spartan have a blog for them!

Apologies,

Delboy

Right, looking at the rules carefully, I think I can talk about the French stuff...http://www.spartangames.co.uk/the-fearsome-aggressors

First, the Alma. As a description, I really cannot beat the one in the blog. It does describe rather well the unit as we have it. It looks like a somewhat scaled down Marseille to me, and it's not a bad description of what you might wish to do with it in game. As a skimmer, the manoeuvrability you get is very, very useful. Using mines to limit the movement of smalls is something I've seen a few times, and these can virtually ignore them.

Of course, it does create the possibility of taking an all skimming fleet. It's clearly a fleet with a very distinctive tactical and visual style. The one warning I have is your opponents may well be fed up with seeing those F*$£%"!"£ ships everywhere, even on land, and complain about those cheesy French ignoring terrain rules and shooting down all their rockets again and again....maybe it's just me and my opponents.

This was a fairly easy unit to work with, as the model and initial description give a very strong identity, and we had lots of precedent from other small naval craft, so decided not to re-invent the wheel.

Next the Char 1C.

I have a confession to make. Prior to playtesting this model, I'd never used a heat lancette. I'd looked at the Toulon, and always managed to buy something else instead. However, a few days ago, I bought a unit of Toulons.

Again, the blog does a really good job of describing the model. The synergy with the landship and the existing mediums is really rather good. The 1 C's are support units, so get them in the right place, and they're going to hit hard, but you can't get away without a plan for them, unlike some more general units. I can see a careful mix of terrain and flanking units (either faster moving stuff or actual flank deployments) could really shepard the enemy into the ideal place to get those heat lances into play.

The combination of the existing R6 and bombards, this new one, the Marseille, and the Belgium medium tank gives us French players a surfit of choices for mediums on the land. We very much get to choose what kind of list we want to run.

Again, this was a fairly simple unit, given the excellent start the model and description gave us to work from,

The only complaint about the new French things I have is they're available from the 19th of December, and I'm going to be away, without paints etc, from the 17th.....And I've ordered some anyway, they're that fun to use.

For the record I have absolutely no inside info on the forthcoming Spartan goodies, nor have I playtested anything. The following is my blindfolded, shot-in-the-dark, Vegas-long-odds, screaming, stabbing guess at the Lord Hood's stat card. Not looking to steal any thunder, but I presume that wild conjecture is permitted.

Besides, if I nail it, I look like a champ! :D

@Sebenko: From the description in the blog, it works like the Prism Tank/Tower from Red Alert 2... Multiple, small beams go in, one enormous beam o' death hits some poor sod and he goes *poof*. And as for the worm? IT'S A ROBOTIC SPICE WORM WITH A PARTICLE ACCELERATOR IN IT'S *MOUTH*!!!!! If that doesn't make you cackle with mad glee, nothing will :D

Bejebus: I would rather it didn't have the shields, both so the price stays low-ish and the whole 'glass cannon' feel that BC's have... hopefully this ''rangefinder'' will be some description of MAR that allows for better/easier ranged shots

i agree the whole battle cruiser concept was a failure battleshup guns/ cruiser speed/armour that couldn't take a collision with a row boat.

it might be fun if the new MAR gives us some long range firepower even if its only to stop us getting sunk instantly at close range

My initial thoughts when the whole Battle Cruiser discussion started was to have something that will either skirt the edges of battle and bring it's massive firepower to bear on priority targets, or to hang back under a Guardian and lob shots at the enemy via a scout/recon. Either way, we have Gunships/Battleships/Dreadnaughts that can absorb damage and Frigate/Destroyers for close-medium range firepower. Now we just need Naval Artillery (we are still British, after a fashion) and we are set :D

I hope Bejebas is right. Main Turrets at 9,7,6,4 would rock some serious toque. A pair of BCs at RB4 linking for 14AD...that would be something. :)

My math says it would be 12AD. But once they start getting damaged (something that could happen easyly if they don't have shields) this would drop very quickly, so I don't think it's overpowered.

Would it not be 4+2+2 for the one, and then 2AD for each of the other's three turrets?

i always thought you added each ship idvidually the same way nut halved them as you added sobsequent ships so

ship 1 = 4+2+2 = 8 ship 2 = 4+2+2 total ship 1 = 8 + 1/2 ship 2 = 4 total 12 ?
