Assault resolution

In assault resolution, is Carnage result meant to  be able to give enemy model multiple points of damage? For example, if unit beats its assault target by 5 hits, it receives critical hit and 1 point of damage. 6 hits - critical hit and 2 points of damage...etc. until the target model is potentially sunk?

That is how we played it during our first 3.0 game last Sunday. It was very strong for the attacker (I liked it since I play Prussians) and I think this is what was intended, but I would like confirmation.
