Boxed sets

The reveal in the latest blog update is that boxed sets will be one large two cruisers and four frigates.  Can we at least get three cruisers.  This was something Spartan did early on and a nuisance then.  Blisters, boxed sets whatever are so much better when they contain a full unit.

Do the new rules allow for 3 cruisers in a cruiser selection?  Or are we going to see a 2-4 sort of selection?

According to the beta its 1-3 Cruisers per formation, while frigates are 1-5.  No idea why you wouldn't include a max sized squadron for both.

Hmm... interesting.  I wonder if we are going to see multiple types of frigates/cruisers as add-ons in later releases.  Hard to say at this point...

Just seems an awkward number of both, and something Spartan did that fan pressure quashed as it required you to buy multiple packs just to get one complete squadron.  It also depends on how you can buy further models either as individuals, blisters, unit packs or only in themed boxed sets.

So still a frigate and a cruiser short and no evidence that future box sets won't have odd numbers of boats, when they will be released and what kind of models.  It does seem it will be a much smaller and more limited game for some time and one that requires you to buy more boxes to get a decent game.

This would be rather... unfortunate. I can understand the benefits of having a lower (monetary) point of entry, but when someone asks on the forums to make an informed decision, the community will quickly make it obvious, that this is not the "real" starting point. We all have seen it, before The real question is that how will the smaller ships be distributed. If they will be single blisters, Everything will be fine. If they will be squadrons... Well. Spartan tried this method, and as I remember it, it was not fun for the fans...

On the bright side: after giving in to fan pressure, the second generation Spartan starter boxes (especially the Dystopian wars boxes) became unbeatable in value. It won't help rebooting the new DW setting, but if the same lesson is learned, the 2nd generation Warcradle starterboxes will be awesome! (... in 3 years... if the game survives)

Pity they couldn't do it for 3.0 boxes, even if it means waiting a little longer.

It will be interesting to see how the final rules shake out...from the beta, it felt like the stats were set such that having a squadron of ships that was one or two short wasn't nearly as big of a deal as it was in 2.5 and earlier. That might help mitigate the return of the "Hotdogs in packages of 10, hotdog buns in packages of 8" issue with box sets and expansion packs.
