Convention Demos

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

What's your experience with doing WWX demos at events?  The few of us that play WWX in the N W are volunteering to run demos at the Orcacon convention this January in Bellevue, WA, US. Sooo what's a good point value to make little demo lists? Between the three of us we have enough to field at least a 1000 points with any faction or allegiance and not share models between the lists. What are some of your wins and misses? Any advice?

I mostly did demogames ranging from 500-750 points per side, so that both newbies are able to keep track of their units and it worked out great.

But for the last conventions we actually took a painted up Gunfight at Red Oak box and splitted both posses.

After most games people asked me what's inside the two player starter box and i was able to point directly onto the models and the rules material they just played with.

Usually they were pretty intrigued by the low price point of the box because they could already relate to all the stuff which comes with it, which resulted often enough that after two to three convention days, the Red Oak box was all sold out.

All great advice, the only down side is there will be no way of purchasing minis through us... since we're neither retailers nor distributors nor actual Trailblazers/Warhosts, we don't have stock to sell. We're just trying to whip the civilian base into an unruly mob. Our FLGSs are Objective Tokens that can only be held by Civilian Units.

Can you network with other traders at the event? You might not be selling, but if you know retailers that are taking stock of WWX there then you could have a chat with them before the event. At the very least it means you can easily direct people to their booth/table for buying the minis that you've just shown them.

Be sure to pop around the store booths that are local once you're running - whilst their staff will be busy at the very least give them an invitation and let them know you are there and where. If they get a slack moment one of their covering staff could head over. You could even arrange a "store demo" moment for those attending (although you might do this before/after the open period rather than during - but that would require you to setup and invite before the main day).

Not a bad call. We'll touch base with any of the LGS booths that are there.

On another note, at a "swap meet" event that runs quarterly up here, we did chat with one of the new, small stores about WWX, and he was really interested. We plan on going down to the store to show it off at some point. They're a really small shop currently, but have plans to move to a larger space in the new year, so maybe we can get them on the train for when they move.
