Sell Me on Your Favorite Faction

Recommended Posts

I saw this thread in the Dystopian Age forums and I think its a great idea for our FSA board. So, why are they your favorite?

The RSN sold me with the design of the Spectre class Battleship, though in sleek black every RSN ship design is mean looking. There are strong choices to make at each tier, but endless ways of composing your limited fleet on paper. The 'Make the most of what you got' attitude of the RSN really appeals to me while I get more experience with this game. Elite Crews is an amazing MAR, it comes in handy everywhere from using escorts as target painters to hiding in gas clouds. Torpedo Spook can be devastating if the dice are in your favour. We still have access to the fixed kinetic railguns from the Dindrenzi, and they make the dreadnought a real joy to field (with proper support of course.)

The best way I could sell you on the RSN is to try three games at 800pts. Two with a carrier, one with their Battleship (equipped with the +2" mv and -1" Turn MARs). Play around with the cruisers and destroyers, they're the real flavour of your fleet and using those squadrons well will be your biggest steps towards victory. You might not actually win, I rarely do while I experiment with fleet compositions and tactics, but you will have fun seeing how far you can push each of the Tier 1 and 2 options. The frigates are great too, I just like big ships (and I cannot lie.

So come on then! Why did you choose that faction as your favorite? Ship designs? Rules? Appreciation for the race's fluff?

Given that I have models from every single Fleet, I am not sure I have a Favourite.

I have Relthoza the most, but that's where I started. Honestly I Love all the Miniatures, every faction has some great "in game" abilities, there is so much great fluff too.

It is the whole Firestorm Universe that is my Favourite.

I own three fleets, with Sorylian being my favorites. Because they have ships with shotguns. :D

Next are the Kedorians, because of this little fluff snippet flying around the old spartan side, with them being parasites, like the gua'uld. And the Veydreth are there because spartan closed and i made some spontanous purchases for natural allies for my sorylians. :)

My play experience with the Sorylians has been frustrating.  Too slow, and with the shorter range weapons they have a tough time engaging the enemy with enough strength to make a difference.  YMMV, of course.  To me, they are more challenging to play than some other factions.

Dindrenzi are still my favorite though.  Point, shoot, and boom.  Nice and easy.  :)

The Rense System Navy- they have an excellent reason to exist as they are, elite xenophobic and dangerous to all life in the galaxy.

Ships wise- the aesthetic is brilliant, sleek and predatory. Couple this with the technological superiority to the regular Dindrenzi armada, and I feel they are the ideal force for me in the game. Looking forward to seeing how the fiction/ universe develops, but I certainly hope I get to scream "Remember Dramos!" at people as I board their capital ships :P

The Directorate: For all your space-faring acquisition needs!

Seriously, we have all the toys. A ship for every role: Firepower; Boarding; SRS; Stealth. You want it, we got it!

A slightly steeper learning curve than some other fleets, but worth it.

@BrimatI'm interested in Sorylians for a second fleet, can you tell me what their performance and playstyle is like in your experience? I've yet to see any on the table unfortunately

My experience too. If your ships survive long enough for the brawl, then you can be the winner. The combination of not-so-fast and close combat weapons makes it hard to get in effective range. Good results can be achieved with cruisers jumping in. Another possibility is, that i am not the tactical genuis i believe i am.

Nope, the Sorylian stat-build is flawed.  Just about every ship wants to use Shunt Entry to make up for how slow and short-ranged they are at everything.  Their Tier 1 selections are the worst, because their optimum targets are Tier 3 ship formations, as if they were scared of being swarmed.

That said, it doesn’t take much to make them viable compared to everything else.  The easiest fix for v2.0 is to swap the speed values of Sorylians and Aquans.  More speed would enable the space Lizards to get better board positions, while the hyper-maneuverable Aquans with he best of everything should have a hard time getting to where they want to be.

Speed isn't so much the issue as the combination of shorter range bands compared to almost every other fleet and reduction of firepower at the furthest range bands. (several ships had entire Range Bands cut off or drastically reduced) Give these cut-down ships back they're V1.0 Range Band 3&4 Attack Dice and Fire Arcs,  you already fix more than half the problem.

That’s another solution to the problem; there are likely a few others as well.  The trick is to give everyone a distinct playing style while also maintaining balance.  There’s plenty of evidence for Sorylians being under-powered while Aquans are over-powered compared to everything else; my proposal would potentially address both issues, not just Sorylian issues.
