3rd Edition Pathogen rules

Recommended Posts

Have you guys seen the new documents about pathogen (and saurians) released in the kickstarter updates? The Pathogen design document has some interesting tidbits pertaining to the future pathogen ruleset:

Virulent Infection Pathogen Special Rule
All Pathogen boarding craft are carriers for their insidious Pathogen virus, ensuring that their attempts at boarding will often cause debilitating effects to a target long after they have been seemingly ejected from the vessel. If a Pathogen Boarding Assault succeeds in causing Damage to a target model, that model automatically gains an Infection Permanent Effect Marker. This Marker can be repaired in the End Phase as normal, however should the vessel fail to do so, it immediately suffers the loss of 1 Hull Point and 1 Crew Point

Systems Network MAR

... In the case of the Pathogen, the Large and Massive models in the fleet have access to a Systems Network that gives friendly Pathogen models within range the Long-Range Assault Boats MAR, meaning they can launch their boarding assaults from a greater distance, greatly increasing their ‘threat bubble’ with that weapon system.

Seems like pathogen is going be spreading a lot of infection tokens around.

I think the idea is now that Systems Network can have a variety of uses.  The design document shows that it is now a templated rule with (as I recall) the format Systems Network[Effect, Range] (could be the other way around).  This allows them to have specialist ships in fleets that add whatever rule they want without having to come up with a new MAR each time.  I wouldn't assume this means anything for Relthoza; I suspect there will be a decent amount of Systems Network implementations in the various fleets.

If the new Relthoza Systems Network is only for cloak, then it is a huge kick in the nuts for them.  Cloak is much worse than Stealth for the approach, so if they lost that then there's another durability downgrade on the shortest-ranged fleet in the game.  It's going to be impossible to approach an enemy force without getting mauled.

Yeah, the way Sys Net is formatted now, it'll have a MAR/rule and a range. For Relth, it could even be formatted to give cloaks, which is what I think they're going to do. Siren Escorts could be given System Network (Specialist (Focus Fire)) to fill in for their +1 to hit role, certain Directorate Larges could give out Assault MARs, so that their escorts were compatible when taken with them but not all the time.

There are a lot of potential applicatiins for this. The question will definately be whether it's USEFUL for any given race.

I'm wondering what the restrictions might be. Ba'Kash fleets led by Relth Dreads might be veeeery powerful, if they can ride on the Dread's cloaks...

Well, retractable plating isn't a thing any more, so there's no telling how tough the new Ba'Kash are.  Still, it is a consideration that the new Systems Network rules do apply to allied forces, considering that the Core6+Natural Allies are all one big faction now.
