The Egyptians!!

Recommended Posts

So, looking over the new Egyptians ORBAT, they seem a bit ... "Covenanty"?

A big ol' Energy Blast (that stands to wreck anything bunched up first turn), Energy Beams, and Drones.

Better Drones than the CoA has (Swarm Tactics as standard, with the Egyptian Carrier handing out "(Hunter (All) +2)" at 12".

WTF? The Euclid @300pts only sports (Hunter (All) +1, Acrobatic Pilots, Swarm Tactics), at 8" range.

The fluff for Egypt doesn't mention anything about an Egypt-Antarctican alliance, so what's up with sharing/improving upon the Covenant tech?

<grumble grumble grumble, "Power Creep...something...New Shiny Syndrome...grumble>

;-)

I'm sure things will improve for the penguins.

Back in 1.1, they had to be updated because of the background given to the Australians (for those of you who don't know, the Free Australian Navy was "paid" several older-prototype energy turrets, in lieu of a cash shortfall. The Australians then tinkered with a few, improving them over the CoA's ones. The CoA, in turn, used those as the basis for their Heavy Energy Turrets.)

Now they need to write in the story that some Danish lend-lease Havels got upgraded with Speerschleuder high payload mines!

Good thinking @Nazduruk_Bugzappa!;)

So the Egyptians found some of our old wrecked drones... and reverse engineered them? And made them better?

From the blog post :

At the close of Operation Sirocco Britannian forces en-route to relieve the new independent Egypt clashed with forces from the Covenant of Antarctica. From the wreckage of this battlefield Egyptian scientists could recover many examples of drone control technology. These have been successfully reverse engineered, giving rise to a cornerstone of the new Egyptian military

And it must be similar with the Eye of Râ energy weapons.

The Covenant should clean up their mess if they doesn't want their technologies to be stolen.

The description of the Eye of Ra doesn't match what the Antarctic energy blast does.

The Antarctic one uses a modification of translocation generator technology. The Eye of Ra focuses solar energy.

( @Spartan Mike what happens when the model is stuck in a storm, or at night? There's no sunlight to focus.)

@Nazduruk_Bugzappa I like to think they have sizable banks for said solar enegery tucked away in those BLOATED hulls! Additional repositories of kinetic build up from engines can be channeled to said cells... as dangerous and vulnerable-inducing as that might be! (Something that the Covenant need not worry about with thier "inferior" energy weapons! Lol ;) )

@RuleBritannia new drones! They have to be thematic for the nation!

@Bazlord please don't think for a minute that the drones of the mighty covenant are going to be outclassed! If anything this polished and tuned up RoE ORBAT should be giving you a little hint to some of the changes that are coming to the CoA concepts... as this ORBAT better represents a cohesive and completed concept, where the COA one was a hold over that needed to get out with the huge pile of others! Lol but hardly represents the vision in its entirety for the faction or the others!

Its also safe to assume... that the Covenant has spies in legion. Better still, they have a much more erudite team of theorists and innovators, lording over those from all these silly lesser nations!

Exciting times! New nation woo!

Ahhhh... THERE we go. Thanks. I was just going off the fluff from the v2.5 rule book - haven't got the Sirocco book, and didn't look at the blog post. My bad

They used to ditch after attack runs, part of that ditch could have been self destruct..... though that really is a waste if materials it would be safer for tech superiority.

I think it was more a case of in an attack run, the drone was the weapon - a drone is probably little more than a sturginium reactor, with an energy projector on one end, a nozzle on the other, and wings in between. Don't bother arming them with bombs, just let them impact and let the core breach do the rest.

Its also a good way to stop technology falling into potentially unfriendly hands.

Give drones natural hunter +1 everything. (Our drones are the best drones with the most experienced controllers)

Give carriers combat coordinator swarm tactics. (Seems reasonable to assume that there would be more drones buzzing near their launch ships)

Give command and control vessels (e.g. hyperbius, hippasus) Combat Coordinator hunter +2 (which replaces rather than stacks with their natural +1 if my memory of the rules is right) (Specialist support systems make our drones super precise).

Boom, job done. @Spartan Mike please send my consultancy fee to the usual address, I will accept new resin minis in lieu of cash. (I am also available to help patch the PA rules back into a fun shape! :P)

I guess that brings up an interesting fluff discussion about the drones.

Are the drones like how we use the term today, a remotely controlled airplane, or is it more like the traditional "borg" style of AI, where they can think for themselves a bit but can't do much without having a more powerful "computer" to connect to?

According to the fluff, most of their larger "drone" equipment is Tele-operated, and most of the smaller stuff has limited decision trees that can be overridden by operators.

But enough about the covenant - this thread is about the sand penguins, not their ice-loving cousins....

----------------

The Egyptians certainly do have an interesting list - close ranged with swarms of drones for support, but there does appear to be a bit of a lack of mid-weight options - their cruiser is a heavy, their only other medium choice is a carrier, so not really a line unit...I can see Egyptian forces either being very top heavy or relying heavily on their frigates and corvettes instead.

i can see the corvettes racing forwards under the cover of drones, frigates and blasts to tie up the enemy whilst the heavier units manever into position to bring their broadsides to bear. A bit like the russians in that respect, but they don't really have anything in the way of any sort of long-range firepower options that can be included.

I'm not sure about that, there isn't much that can match the Eye of Ra in RB4, I think a long range brawl would be hard for most enemies to win.  As such I don't see a need for Egypt to rush forward.

To me I think I would start by handing back and using the Eye to force the enemy to close and holding back the smalls and mediums for a classic pincer.  While it seems almost too obvious for someone to fall for, I think there are too many nations that wouldn't have a lot of other choices because RoE can put out a solid amount of AD in RB4 and 3.

Two things about that:

1: the only blast they have is on the battleship, which is arguable the most expensive battleship in the game, and its average AD is 10-11. The CoA looks at that and laughs, as they can get that reliably on their battleship or even cheaper on their gunship. And the heavy cruisers get a cruiser-weight energy beam. Again, ice penguin laughs when compared to the Cleomedes or even the Plato.

2: that theorem relies on that one weapon smashing the enemy Fleet from range - but it's not the fleet's only weapon, and it's certainly not their primary weapon. In my view, the Eye of Ra (and the rockets to some extent as well) is designed to provide the RoE a measure of long ranged firepower so they don't just have to weather the barrage as they try to get into range of their broadsides - and, in my view, it's the broadsides that are the main power of the Fleet.

if you were to try to exchange long range firepower in an artillery duel, the FSA would bombard you to scrap, the CoA energy turrets would cut you to pieces, and the EotBS would burn you to the waterline with their incendiary rockets.

I'm not seeing the CoA matching that firepower very easily, at least not in RB4.  Neither would the FSA, as even the Enterprise only gets AD12 in RB4 if it can line you up on a side where they can get all 3 turrets to bear.  EotBS is a very real threat at RB4 with rockets, but the Mandjet has pretty good AA.

Now the numbers change pretty drastically at RB3 as there is a pretty big jump in the RB3 firepower of almost every nation.  So yeah, RoE either wants to stay in RB4 or move to RB2.  But with the Mandjet having 360 on the Eye of Ra that's going to help a lot to allow them to keep range if they want it.

I don't think they can win a game staying entirely in RB4 but I think they've got enough threat there to discourage anyone from staying there either.  So they should be able to dictate the engagement a fair amount.

I'm just not worrying right now, ROE are the only faction completely migrated to 2.5.  All other Orbats are translations to 2.5 and not the final product.  Once we get the final orbats, I'll start paying attention to things that don't seem right.....

Unless I am mistaken and they have finally been uploaded
