What should I start with?

Recommended Posts

Every Antarctic fleet is different. Some swear by the e-turret Aristotle + attached Kepler combination, others prefer the Descartes, and others like the Pericles.

The best thing for you to do is to pick what models you actually like the look of, and build your fleet and tactics around them

... nobody likes the pericles.

I would agree that the best place to start is the naval battle group, it gives you a nice mix of toys. Coa vessels are mostly quite specialised, which allows you you put together almost any kind of fleet. Try out the naval battle group in a game then see what you want to add more of; more close range punch? Get some zenos. More drone power or energy turret boosting? Get the bombardment box (a very good buy since Keplers are our best carriers). Need some air support? Capeks got you covered etc. Coa is the most fun and certainly the most stylish fleet (in my totally unbiased opinion :P) with loads of options and weird toys/tactics available. Just remember to laugh like a true mad scientist whenever you fire a particle accelerator!

Some sort of masochistic tendency? :P

Maybe I should rephrase. The model looks good and it would have a solid place in a fair few fleets if its rules made it anything other than a complete liability to include. And since those rules are likely to change soon, a pericles may not be a bad thing to have in the not too distant future. But right now I would never recommend even thinking about including one in a list. And considering how nearly any coa model can be recommended in some certain situations or fleet builds...

Looks good? The Pericles is an ugly floating shed. It really lacks the sleek and cool Covenant A E S T H E T I C. Keplers and the Epicurus are my carriers of choice. What's the point of winning if you don't look good doing it?

On topic: Anything in the Naval Medium size class. They're all at least 4/5 star choices. Just choose the box that includes the one you like best.

I quite like the look of the pericles because it is just a bit different. The lovely sleek lines of other coa ships on the front line, compared to the more stodgy, solid yet still elegant supporting back line vessels. But then I also like the kob avenger and think it one of the best looking models in the game (outside the coa of course) so maybe my aesthetic taste should not be relied on :P

To be honest, in the old rules, my peris were just glorified tugboats for my TDOs (yay, towing rules). In the current edition, they only see the table because the Dio got upgraded to a (cv9) dreadnought, and I hate taking dreadnoughts at less than 1500pts.

One of my friends, who regularly borrows my fleets, loves them a lot.

I will be honest that I like my Pericles as well, just wish it was not handing my opponent free points.  Though it sounds like that may change soon.

As to what to get I agree with the rest of the posters, Navel Battle Group box is the best starting point and it lets you try most of the CoA's tactics out (teleporting, drones, and E-turrets).  From there it depends on what you think fits your play style, if you come to like the drones better the Bombardment box is one of the better ways to go and it supports E-turret lists quite well.  If you like E-turrets the Hunter Flotilla comes with our E sniper mediums and our corvettes for added fun.  The Support Flotilla has our Time Dilation Orb (TDO) and our escorts, it also has the Pericles wich you probably noticed is liked by some but not well regarded right now.  This is due to it having a battleship price tag with cruiser defenses, it is a fleet carrier though so it can put out some important hurting on people.  There is also the Descartes that just came out and both variants add interesting advantages to the fleet, MKII is the only dedicated boarding platform in the CoA force list.

I picked up the battle for Iceland 2 player box.  I normally play PE, but I am looking at getting more CoA to try them out.  I am not sure where to start.  Is it worth getting more heavy destroyers?  The box came with 4, but can only field squadrons of 2-3.  What larges would work well with the squadron that come in the 2 player box?  Thanks.
