Descartes - I sink, therefore I am.

It is a bit shishy but only when you got greedy @Thamoz and brought it to the surface to use all its weapons! It's the versatility of the weapon that adds the extra punch, it can kill a squadron of smalls if they are close together (my first Arminius frigates who needed to get out of arc of Diophantus PA and so didn't have the movement to spread out) another shot double critted a Havel and single critted a Rhine (interesting question, presumably it can see over a massive? So if the Havel was further away on the far side of the Rhine (it was close in) the you could t place the template over both as the middle would have to be placed on the Rhine somewhere?). I think it also did some damage to reivesrs I think. So it can really threaten squadroned mediums, again unless they are spread out. At which point ships become to far away to all board the same thing, or go the same way round an island. The only target it doesn't like are flying things and possibly subs? Vengeance it to death clearly the answer...

Hopefully trying out both the MkI and MkII in anger this Saturday, vs some of those traitorous ruskies.

I'm especially excited to deploy the MkII and casually mention her 18" boarding threat range*

It will be a laugh if he brings that heavy bomber. That said, there's a litany of things the terrible twins will be surprising my opponent with, and I don't know which will be funniest.

  • CoA boarding list (of a different sort, yet again).
  • Giant blast cannon that ignores ablative and doesn't worry about that fixed channel nonsense.
  • Battleship moving like a corvette.
  • My torps actually being useful (if I get lucky with the painter on the MkII).
  • Giving everything shield coverage, and not just by my usual shennanigans of only using Plutarches as my smalls.

I'll write up a full report when I get back home, but just to note a few key points-

  • My opponent made some fairly major mistakes, which might dent the testing value of my report
  • A Descartes MkII with escorts and CAP is a scary boarding prospect, even with 0AP
  • Game over by halfway through turn 2
  • Made some mistakes, but the theory holds strong.
  • Got too excited to actually be playing DW again, forgot to take any pictures until the end.

It's a bit gutting to hear that just when our boarding capacity got better (Descartes influence), the new boarding rules appear to make it easier to defend against. Pooled AP rather than separate AP per boarding vessel. I.e. suddenly corvettes are less of a threat.

I wonder what other cheeky surprises v2.5 will bring to shift the meta.

It does however make us less likely to lose quite so many vessels to boarding too.

I looked at the downloads page and it does say the current rules have not been finalized.  So at this point it could be both.  On the one hand we know boarding will be getting harder in 2.5 so it could be pointed for that, or it could be we will see an increase in the point cost as the MKII is pretty effective.
