BluFlcn Paint Works

Recommended Posts

I wish, I'm no good at all with green stuff. Tried it a couple of times and hated the results. Based on the little short story I've read about Pathogen I would feel compelled to try and model them as something other than tentacles. I just don't think I could do it. That and I have a bunch of things on deck ahead of anything unique like Pathogen, don't get me wrong though, I really want to tackle an OmniDyne dreadnought all pathogened out and horrifying.

Now is as good a time as any to give a small update on my Ryushi project, I worked all weekend so I haven't had a ton of time but I've made some progress. The carrier is getting highlights now and will be ready for airbrushing in an hour or three. After that I'll add a glass effect to the domes. The cruisers and corvettes need the red stripes and dome colors, then highlights. So hopefully sometime tonight I can airbrush the fleet and be done with them. Won't have SRS tokens done tonight though.

I also extended the front red stripe on the battle carrier to add a little something to the fore of the hull.

Final note: still no third brigand cruiser :\ Hopefully this week, it is coming via international shipping and so I expect it to be slow.

I finally finished my Ryushi. I still have four SRS tokens to do but at this point I probably don't need to, two of each type will suffice for now. This took longer than I had hoped but school is back on so I'll probably slow way back down or disappear again as the semester picks up pace.

I need to dig my good camera out of storage since i'm real unhappy with the picture quality of my camera phone, but as I'm still also working on my basement I don't really have much of an office to paint in, so I've got to make due. I apologize for the crappy quality, I may re-take pictures in the future.

The scheme is a modified version of the typical red with white stripes and blue osl. I've explained before that I wanted a Ryushi fleet that looks angry and vengeful. The Ryushi suffered at the hands of the Zenian League at the end of the first Storm Zone conflict for the crime of remaining neutral. Most Ryushi try to carry on and now stand with the alliance in a mostly supportive role, but not this fleet. Led by the Battle Carrier and flagship The Black Gate, these Ryushi swore an oath of vengeance and seek out Zenian League allies deep in the Storm Zone to rain down ruin and destruction with clouds of drone fighters & bombers and punishing broadsides. They leave wreckage and death in their wake on a scorched-earth campaign.

I really wish the Ryushi cruisers had a fixed fore kinetic upgrade option. The ships look like they have a fixed fore gun and I decided to add some osl just to give the front of the ship some color, but it would fit in with their Tier 1s and also add some long range punch while the Ryushi make their advance.

I took some new pictures of my Syndicate and Directorate, mainly close ups of Tier 2s for the Directorate since I realized I don't have any and the fleet pictures are very poor quality. I'll upload them later today.

Thanks for viewing, folks!

Thanks!

I used Tamiya Color. It goes on translucent but it doesn't go on super even so you have to do several light LIGHT coats. I also only did one side and the sides of the acrylic pieces, taping the side I wanted to show because of the uneven way the stuff goes on. You get enough acrylic that after you pop out the shapes you'll use you can experiment with the left overs.

I've got some work in progress OmniDyne. I've been busy with classes so I haven't been able to devote big chunks of time to painting, also I'm not ready to finish because I'm still waiting on my four OSO ring half pieces and that third Brigand. If it goes another week without I'll have to e-mail.

The synergies, a single left over auditor, and the second battleships (which is just the other side chunk of the second dreadnought I have floating around) are ready to receive green OSL. The other new ships, which their names escape me at the moment, need metal colors, shading, and yellow running lights yet. With a little bit of luck I can get them all ready to receive OSL this weekend and then it'll just be a waiting game for the other ring pieces.

That said I figured I would give my two cents on the new models; they're crazy awesome. With full rings the escort carrier/light cruiser look great and maintain the standard OSO style I love so much. That said, I'm not sure why the decision was made to only do half rings for these ships, they look far superior with full rings. Alternatively I thought about chopping the rings and making them look like the old synergy style curved fins. It would look sleek as hell on the light cruiser but wouldn't jive well with the escort carrier.

The cruisers are a meaty looking mini-executive battleship. Not much to say, they look the part of OmniDyne and fill a role the fleet needed real badly with their broadsides.

The new synergies are both disappointing in one aspect but kick butt in others; the loss of the curved fins in favor of more straightened fins is kind of lame, but the new chunkier profile works with straight fins. Additionally the ship looks like a space lamborghini now and that's a plus. That and the new corvettes are pretty big in comparison to their older counterparts. In an effort to keep some uniformity I've decided to relegate my older synergies to escort duty.

Anyway, here are some terrible WIP shots from my phone. Sorry for being all wordy.

I'm just wrapping up the airbrushing for my OSO and will post some pictures of the finished products afterward. Hopefully this afternoon.

Kind of frustrating though, I received the metal drop ins for my third Brigand Cruiser in the mail but no actual resin cruiser. Sadly I don't think I'll be getting a third corsair cruiser at this rate.

Anyone know of someone other than Spartan's own store selling them?

Yeah I generally agree. It's tough around these parts to find anything Spartan without special requesting it. We're kind of in the middle of nowhere :\

Who knows, maybe Spartan is feeling real generous and is willing to attempt to deliver my third brigand a third time...

Alright, it took me all day and most of the night (because of real life, not because I was working on models all day), but here they are. I have to say I really like the new models:

The new cruisers are nice ships, but if I have a gripe it's that they are what the Executive Battleship should have been. I actually am not a big fan of the side of the dreadnought being the battleship. Scaled up, the support box cruisers are a perfect battleship, they even have the look.

The Escort carrier is by far my new favorite model. It's elegant and has a definite Battlestar Galactica aesthetic that really rocks. I have a couple of conversion ideas for the carrier chunk and a future purchase. I think if the "wings" were filled in and an engine were added, they would look like pretty sleek cruisers for other factions. I'm thinking of trying this and making improvised Corsair cruisers.

The new light cruisers look good but if I do have a complaint it's their size. The light cruisers are gigantic models in comparison to other cruisers in general. This is obviously because they're basically old gunships with the guns yanked off and made to fit the carrier piece, but still. I didn't take any pictures of it, but I sat them next to a directorate, hawker, and terran cruiser and the OSO light cruiser is easily as big as all of them. It's not a big deal, since the models don't represent actual scale, but it throws me off a tad. Otherwise they're great looking models.

I love these new synergies. They're sleek and look like space lamborghinis.

And to finish it off; the executive battleship. No I don't have the piece to make it an official battleship, but I don't feel like buying a patrol box to get one. I just don't think I'd ever need another 6 synergies and 3 auditors. Also a fleet picture. I thought about breaking out the other models but I just don't have the table space. Guess I have too many OSO ships... but I just love those engine rings and ship designs.

I really need to get a new light box. My old one didn't survive the transition to the current office I'm working out of. Between that and not using my actual camera, I may re-take some pictures I've posted recently. I'm not happy with their quality but for now I think this is it for a while. At least until the end of this semester, anyway.

I do have a Terquai patrol box, the new Syndicate patrol box & battleship, and the Aquan models from the RotO box to do, but I think I'm going to put them on hold for the time being. Besides I need some inspiration or ideas for the Terquai and Aquans. I have dragon scale stencils for the Aquans but I am not sold on a color scheme yet. Nor am I sold on a color scheme for the Terquai but I am leaning toward grays and blue with bright turquoise OSL... Turquoise Terquai sounds kind of amusing to me, but I'm not sure yet. If anyone has any opinions on that I'm definitely open to it.

Thanks for viewing guys!

That's a nice looking fleet BluFlcn, you really make me want to start painting my own OmniDyne ;)

The light cruiser is on the big side indeed, no doubt the result of wanting to get away with one engine ring size.

The current FA range shows more size anomalies resulting from to much standardisation, the Dindrenzi gunship for instance.

And the ship models are actually supposed to be all in the same scale by the way (1:10,000).

I agree with you on the contents of the OmniDyne patrol fleet box, not long time OmniDyne fan friendly, and using the sides of the Foundry as BB's doesn't excite me either.

A scaled up Leverage class cruiser for a BB would have been much nicer indeed, but that would have required a new (larger) engine ring, which clearly doesn't fit with Spartan's current “getting away with the least amount of parts possible” approach.

I don't mind standardisation, but they're pushing it too far in my opinion.

And another thing I don't like is having to buy additional engine rings to “complete” the light cruiser / escort carrier models.

Thanks!

I figured its size was because of the escort carrier & engine ring bit. It's not a big deal it just kind of throws me off a little when next to a standard tier 2. If Spartan puts one of the Execute Battleship pieces up for for sale I would probably buy it. In fact I have an idea for a conversion involving one of the escort carrier bits, the side hangers, and an executive. Bulk out and upscale a dreadnought side like I did with an excelsior and make a more carrier oriented and larger executive. I just don't think I can justify the expenditure on a patrol box for the one battleship. I'm open to trade/buy one off someone though.

Man... waiting on the four engine ring halves is what slowed down the progress of my work the most. I didn't want to get too far into detailing without them since I would have to airbrush the new parts separately and I wanted to maintain the cohesiveness in the color. I kind of failed and there's more color on the bottom halves of the light cruiser/escort carrier engine ring, but because they're on the bottom it's not noticeable unless you flip the model over, which I didn't really bother with highlighting or detailing anyway.

I really hope Spartan re-boxes the light cruiser/carrier group. The half ring just doesn't work in my opinion. If they wanted the smaller profile to match the relative size of the model they should have done half rings in the same way the old Synergy Corvette had curved fins. Since I may do the above conversion if I can find a battleship I was going to cannibalize the escort carrier parts to make unique corsair cruisers and the bigger battleship, I may also cut the half rings and make curved fins out of them. With the long flat profile of the light cruiser I think that would look pretty awesome and reduce the "oh my god that's a big light cruiser" problem.

Oh man... I may have to do another model or even pick up my unpainted Terrans:

R2-TERRAN-IMAGE.jpg

Shut up and take my money, Spartan... Holy cow that's a cool model.

I have been thinking about giving the light cruisers Synergy style fins too...

I agree the result would probably look cool and also reduce their visual size a bit.

The new Terran design looks great, not so sure about it fitting in with the older Terran stuff though.

But Terran design has always been a bit all over the place, so who knows...

I imagine that Indomitable will fit in fine alongside the Perseus/Harpoon and Wayfarer as Gen-4 Terran ships. This may also be a sign of things to come regarding destroyers, cruisers and heavy cruisers for the Terran Alliance fleet.

I have just read the new “Flashpoint Firestorm” blog entry, and it looks like all the main races are going to get a major overhaul miniatures wise, with the focus on modular design, which is something I'm not really looking forward too...
