OSO Unboxing - Patrol and Reinforcement

Recommended Posts

So, my new mercenary ships finally arrived today! I'm so excited...I just can't hide it!

Oh, stop it...

Anyway, here's a few pictures - couldn't do a video as I broke my camera two years ago, and I don't think my phone is a decent enough alternative...

Ok, so, first things first..

Spartan - I have to say it, the new paint scheme doesn't do it. It makes the ships look like some cheap plastic kids models. Why not keep the dark blue you had previously? That worked well.

First off, Reinforcement Box

kiqxDzk.jpg

So, as expected, four hulls, attachments and 6 corvettes. Bases are standard, with small ones for the 'vettes. Also, the corvettes are decently chunky enough - I like them.

The Cruisers, however, were as expected - the half ring on them just really doesn't do them justice.

And its strange - they have the connection point for the second half ring, so why not just include the extra parts and let us do the full ring. They look much better IMO

Now, the Patrol Box

Box comes with bases (small again for the 'vettes), punch out stat tokens, turn template, BattleLog tracker, Taskforce stats card (yes!), and a deck of TACs, with the Marauder cards in them - thankyou Spartan!

Now, my initial thought was probably the same as yours - why three Light Cruiser hulls? Then I saw the attachments and it clicked - "Oh, thats why the gunships looked a little narrow compared to the original ones. They're just mods of the Light Cruiser hulls - clever! And that's why the cruiser hulls have both upper and lower connection points for the rings!"

The Battleship, as you can see, is meant to be used for the Dreadnought - it already has the holes drilled into it. it then uses a separate piece to put the twin peg arrangement on the bottom, with a pair of arms for the second half-ring.

My original thought was to make the BB a three-ring item:

But my thought now is just to cut the arms off and put the second half-ring on the rear of the ship - it already has the mounting points there.

I think I'm going to get 8 light cruisers, 18 'vettes, a Battleship and a gunship out of these parts - I'll use the spare rings from the gunships to complete the light cruiser rings. Eventually, I'll probably buy a second patrol box, so I can get another BB, and then I'll make all the gunships from that one, and I'll have four avaliable - either one squad of three, or two of two, depending on the points available.

I won't post pics of the TF stats here, but basically:

Synergy Covette - Assault Torpedoes (cyber), Pack Hunters

Representative Light Cruiser - Biohazard broadsides, Pack Hunters

Paradigm Escort Carrier - Broadsides, biohazard torps, Interceptors - doesn't have Requisition, so can't mix with Light Cruisers (!)

Auditor Gunship - Biohazard beam fore weapon, Biohazard torps

Leverage Cruiser - Broadsides, Biohazard torps

Executive Battleship - Front and Broadside beams, Assault Torps, Interceptors

Foundry Dread - Front and Broadside beams, Assault Torps, Bomber

Also, they have +1 shields, except of the larges where its +3/+4 shields. DR and speed is about standard.

Thanks for the pic's, our local OSD Omnidyne player-to-be is gonna be ecstatic when he hears that spartan has shipped them. Now we just wait for the rules...

And I totally agree, that colourscheme is...bleh. It looks so boring and dull.

Yes, so much better with the full ring. Either they look unfinished, weird idea.

They could have put 4 spare half-ring in the box as you said.

And the paint, huuugh. And rings not glued straight on the cruisers. And the bomber SRS looking backward... God, it looks not serious...

Thanks for the pics and comments ! :)

I've got mine shipped too. I'm pretty pumped, but I have to agree the new paint scheme is... well.. it leaves a lot to be desired. Not sure what they were thinking there.

It's funny, when my friend first saw my Foundry, he said that I should paint it yellow because it looked like a banana boat. Guess the painter thought so too!:D

Just got mine, 2 reinforcements and 1 support group to go with my existing fleet. Instant dislike of the half ring... so amazingly disappointed. That's on top of not having stats to use them. I got no stat cards, which I thought came with it. No taskforce, FSA or even a model that doesn't look like they cut corners to save 12 cents.

I guess it depends on we're looking for in the hobby - are we here purely for the game, do we enjoy the collecting, modelling painting etc, the social aspect... I guess if one part the community is disadvantaged, that is a black mark overall, but still...

And anyway, if you look hard enough, I'm sure the stats are out there somewhere. We just probably need someone with high stat in Google-fu.

My love of OmniDyne's aesthetic is great enough that I want at least one squadron of everything to complete my fleet. I got into Firestorm mainly for the hobby aspect because everyone I used to play with has moved away and the larger group of players have their games and no interest in changing.

The only question I have for everyone, is it possible to purchase pewter rings anywhere? I can't remember if there was a Marauders parts section at one time with engine rings. If there are, then the issue of the half rings can be solved with a couple extra bucks.

Yet the models are amazing apart from that ring-gate, that have to be said as well :)

I don't think you can find pewter rings anywhere. The only store that would have sell it (if it ever has) is Spartan shop I guess.

Oh. OH. Oooooooh.

Please tell me I'm not dreaming- is that GW yellow-with-red on a Directorate sub-fleet? I have been waiting for someone to make that joke, but for it to be on the official boxes themselves is nothing shy of glorious.

Okay I knew I wasn't dreaming, there was a parts section for the Marauders at one time and there was in fact an Auditor Gunship engine ring you could buy individually for  £3.00 a piece.

The SKU is  FA057

There's a very strong likelihood they pulled them and won't sell them even with the SKU number since it's not listed at all on the Spartan Store. I've heard that stores that buy a lot of FSA products can put in special orders for blisters and parts, but I can't really test this where I live since there isn't a store that buys firestorm products nearby. Everyone who has played has had to buy their stuff through Spartan, ebay, or what have you.

Spartan if you read this, please please please please please sell the pewter engine rings or resin half rings in the parts section. Shut up and take my money!

To be honest...I don't know if that'll work. One of the things that struck me as strange when I was first looking at the new gunship was "that thing looks thinner than the previous one". Can someone with an existing gunship measure the diameter of the engine ring? The new one has a diameter of about 42mm.

It's about 40mm from middle to middle. But why would you want the old parts, anyway. Try e-mailing Spartan Games asking if you can order the new half rings separately. Similar things have supposedly happened in the past. If enough people ask them, maybe they'll even put it in the parts store.

I assume the half rings will end up on the parts store in 9-12 months.

Though I am still waiting on the Anarchist turning up in there and only about half the Forces sections even have parts stores...

Optimist...

I was promised by Spartan, on this forum, that the Relthoza parts list would be up within two weeks.

That happened a long time ago...

The new miniatures that came with the “Battle for Valhalla” set came available as individual miniatures after the set was removed from the store.

So I expect for the Anarchist to become available as an individual model when the “Return of the Overseers” box is retired.

In the mean time, I bought an Overseers box through E-bay for considerably less than what a Patrol Fleet box costs, so if you really need an Anarchist...

The metal ring is also relatively heavy, so you run the risk that mounting one on the new models will shift their centre of gravity enough to make them tip over backwards...

I could indeed be tempted by that Anarchist.

I'll send them an email about getting the rest of the rings.

For the Battleship, could you make the second half ring into a full ring too? Or are the connector parts not there and I'd need to do some cutting and gluing?

edit:

I got your question wrong...

Adding a second half to the forward half ring would include some hobby skills I think...

And the clearance with the upper hull might get a bit tight.
