Federated States Navy - Alaska Battlegroup

Recommended Posts

Sorry, no pics yet if you all dived in her at once to see the disaster that is my painting efforts! :P

Instead this is the thread where I *will* be putting pictures of my fleet as things get done, it's meant to help motivate me to use the wonderful free time I have to finally finish all (or at least get a good start on) my FSA models before I double my collection with the Russians (yes... I did get the "disapproving look" from my gf :P)

Fleet List

Dreadnought - black undercoat

Naval Carrier - black undercoat

Battleship 1 - painted

Battleship 2 - black undercoat

Cruiser Sq 1 - painted

Cruiser Sq 2 - black undercoat

Destroyer Sq - painted

Frigate Sq 1 - WIP

Frigate Sq 2 - WIP

Escorts - painted

A-17 Sq - WIP

Lee Airships - half painted (one completely, two WIP, one black undercoat)

TFTs - unpainted

Black Wolf - unpainted

Models to paint: 21 (excluding 16 TFTs)

If I've forgotten any more of the great task that lies before me then I will update the list! I mean, it can't be that hard can it? :S

EDIT: Updated status lists!

You can see in my thread the results of a really simple paint scheme. I managed to paint my fleet fast enough to keep my self motivated. Basically, prime in black, drybrush a medium grey, brown on the decks followed by a brown ink wash, then drybrush a light grey. That covers picking out the details; after that, choose a feature colour that you really like and paint the hull sections, turrets, and wheel armour with it. Touch up with brass on the tubes and red tips on your rockets and ka-chow! Yankee tastiness.

Yeah... well I made the quite simple mistake of inadvertently creating a slightly complicated scheme :P

Since you're all on for some pictures, I shall get some of the WIP frigates, bombers and the completed battleship I have to hand in just a bit!

Sorry everyone, real life meant I was slightly delayed! I'm having some difficulty getting the pictures up on the gallery, I shall keep trying. :P

EDIT: Okay, I'm now just really annoyed. I shall try doing it on Sunday with better pictures and my PC rather than my Mac, this is just really frustrating. Sorry.

Hey everyone... unfortunately painting has ground to a halt thanks to a nasty head cold -sniffles-

But I do now have the uploaded pictures for my completely painted battleship, the FSS Shiawassee! :P

Comments welcome!

EDIT: Just saw that the pictures don't really show the hull colour that well, but I assure you it is red! :P

One other suggestion, try to have a bit of a softer touch with the brush, and not apply the paint so generously, unfortunately you lost some details because of too much paint, especially in the gun turret, where some of the shells have "fused" together because of too much paint.

Otherwise, it looks good!

Thanks von Klink, I can now actually taste food and despite a little residual cough am certainly feeling better!

Which means I really should start painting again! :P

Edit: Thanks for all the comments guys, I shall take them onboard for my continued work. Bluelabel I did try putting an ink wash on the BB, but it made it look dirty rather than shadowed, so now I just ink the decking to give it some depth.

good stuff, although id suggest watering down your paints more. i normally use 2 parts paint to 1 part water, takes 2-3 coats to get the colour solid, but no detail is lost.

also, this may sound strange, when you use inks or washes mix them with water and a little washing up liquid, its cheaper that flow aid and works kinda the same, paint it into all the details then soak up excess with kitchen roll.

hope this helps :)

also, an airbrush is a great way to get your base colour smooth.
