Hmm, how about old Christmas balls or whatever sphere shaped objects you can get your hands on? Golfballs, tennisballs, etc should do the trick. Then cover them up with stuff.

I mean...check this! Part 1 and Part 2.

EDIT: by the way, these apparently are made using Christmas balls: LINK.

Christmas Balls are a great idea. Now I will be hitting the after Christmas sales!

I would just go dumpster diving! The amount of good stuff people throw away is amazing! I've started various scrapbuilding projects without spending a single penny, well...maybe on glue, but that's it! I mean, here some examples: scrapyard ship, robot, and plague machines.

The point I'm trying to make is that you can really find lots of bits by just looking around you. After Christmas people will throw away so much stuff, bound to be plenty of Christmas balls in there. You can also go to flea markets at the end of the day, see what people leave behind. It's mostly crappy old toys or clothes people can't get rid off, so there will be plenty of sphere shaped objects there. Same goes if you visit a give-away-shop or something. :)
