What Do You Want To See In A Battle Report?

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon all!

Over the past couple of years I have been recording and posting my Battle Reports for Dystopian Wars, and have always been grateful for all the positive feedback received for them. Your comments inspire me to keep them coming, and paint up new stuff to show off! Big thanks to all of my "regular" readers.

Here is a link to all of the posts so far - http://fullsd.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/AAR

I think I have now posted 37 of them, which is staggering for me to think about.

Over the past year my Battle Reports have followed a narrative campaign that myself and my regular opponent have been playing, focused on the Prussian Empire and the Russian Coalition. Before that there was a succession of Reports using different fleets to show off the Second Edition.

I always try to include something new, whether it be a new unit or formation, an entirely new fleet, and even just a strange scenario (lately we have been running a handful of the Ironclad scenarios from Drachenfutter), and have a mixture of competitive games that try to be "balanced" and follow the rulebook, or more narrative events driven by storyline and what looks cool,

But now to the Big Question - What do you like, and what do you not like? What do you want to see? I am open to inspiration and requests!

Some ideas I have considered myself...

  • More or Less Narrative? More Competitive games?
  • Bigger games, and smaller games (we tend to go for 1,000-1,500pt games, I have a mind to try out Samfish's Battle Patrol rules next week)
  • Different fleets (I try to mix it up, but have been on a real kick with the Prussians and Russian lately...)
  • Different reporting style - do you like the way I talk about the activations and games in a narrative style, without detailing exact dice rolls, or would you prefer something more technical?
  • Less pictures? Are the big reports (70+ pics) annoying to read?
  • Greater discussion about fleet building - why we took the composition we did, etc.
  • More flyers (we realise that we do not use anywhere near enough of these...)

Some things will not change -

  • I will only use painted models, so getting new releases and new fleets is not going to happen overnight!
  • I do not play the land game

As said above, I am really looking for some more ideas on keeping the Battle Reports fresh and exciting, and give the people what they want!

Thanks for reading, as ever

George

IMHO, as a person who also publishes AARs on his own blog, yours are fantastic. Your pictures are top-notch, your painting is great and you give a great amount of detail.

My only, very minor complaint is that the dice you use seem to be stuck on sixes - I see SOOO many insta-wrecks in your AARs, a feat that I rarely manage in my games.

Keep up the great work.

Love your reports and narrative campaign style-- that moskva has gotten so much mileage it's insane. I would like to see you play a bit more with fortifications and scenario style games beyond what you've been doing. Think amphibious landings or unusual army setups... Even if you were to change nothing however, You'd still be an inspiration :)

They are great as is. I would like to see some new fleets appear, although you Prussian and Danish fleets have definitely inspired me to start my own Prussian/Danish Navy. I saw a French test model on your blog one, but a fleet never appeared (instead you went for the Russians). I would love to see what you can do with a french fleet.

Your reports are great, I love them. Reports keep me enthused about a game that real life prevents me playing as much as I would like ( so I game vicariously through your reports !!!)

You do not need to change anything but if your asking I like the discussion on why you selected the list and how they performed so more of that would be great. More variety of nations on the table would be a bonus as I do not have either Russians or Prussians.

I also really like your reports.

Plenty of pictures the way they're now, and I really like the narrative.

I would prefer to see some challenging scenery in some of the battles (multiple islands/obstructions in centre parts of the table). Perhaps some extended narratives at the start and end?

Cheers,

Cheer for all the comments! Good to hear such nice feedback!

I will certainly be expanding our pre-game chat on the fleets we have chosen and why. Usually I have decided in advance what Nations to use, but the composition is (almost) entirely up to myself and my opponent. The only limitation is painted models, which can limit the smaller fleets.

The dice do seem very explode-y sometimes, I must admit! Many times my opponents and I have accused each other of rigging dice etc (all in jest, of course). I can assure you that although the scenarios may be unbalanced etc, once we start playing none of the dice rolls are rigged - these results are the ones we have naturally rolled!

Perhaps some extended narratives at the start and end?

Not sure on this comments - each Battle Report had a small chunk of narrative at the start and end (after conclusions). Do you want this expanded?

Cheers,

George

Yes, I'd like that. I think the context of the battles is really interesting and gives the battles added value. It would of course involve some more story writing.

  • More or Less Narrative?

Honestly, I think this is fine the way it is. The narrative ties the scenario's together very well! More's the better, but you could try adding some narrative in between rounds or at special occasions (exploding Hochmeisters would seem to be appropriate).

  • Bigger games, and smaller games (we tend to go for 1,000-1,500pt games, I have a mind to try out Samfish's Battle Patrol rules next week)

I'm curious to see what you could do with differing fleet sizes. If you've got the playerbase, a Dystopian Wars version of Tale of Four Gamers would be awesome!

  • Greater discussion about fleet building - why we took the composition we did, etc.

Seconding this. It's always fun to see someone explain their choices and how it influences their game.

Honestly, your blog (and doubleones', though more ) is my main inspiration to start my own blog and try to keep up regular updates. You have a pleasant writing style. If anything, the only thing I can find is the occasional mis-interpretation of a rule or invalid list (for instance, the Petrushka-list from the latest battle reports only has Specialist Squadrons in your medium section, and you require at least a single non-specialist core force medium squadron in a list). Nothing too bothersome, but that's legitimately the only thing bit of critical feedback I can come up with.

Better lighting :P But seriously, its all good, some bigger battles would be nice, it means showing off more models at a time, some competitive games as well, it certainly makes you think about your list more :) and the amount of pictures is fine BM, a picture says 1000 words :D

Cheers for the comments! I'll be rounding off the Markgraf campaign soon so that will be a big battle, and then we can have a go at some more competitive games for Presidente! The lighting has been an ongoing issue but it will get better as I have replaced some lights in the workshop and the later summer nights mean more game time.
