New Player Looking To Start

Recommended Posts

Ended up 4-1 on the day losing to a well kitted Aquan team. Ended up taking the following:
Dreadnought: -1" TL, +3 WC, Scatter Weapons, Split Fire Weapons, 3 Escorts
Battleship: -1" TL, +2 MN, Open Fore Torpedoes, Double Mines, Scatter Weapons, Split Fire Weapons, High Energy Weapons, 3 Escorts
Carrier: 2 x Cruisers, +2 WC, 2 x 4 Interceptor Tokens

3 x 3 Frigate squad

It was fun and I deviated from the suggestion a little because I painted the Dreadnought and wanted to show it off (satisfaction of my own vanity, I know). I faced 2 x Aquan, 1 x Sorylian, 1 x Terran, 1 x Dindrenzi.

Sorry I neglected to add the 2 x 2 cruiser squadron. 4 of the ten players had 1400 points as that was written on the Facebook post but the fliers had something different. I included the dreadnought to bump up to close to that point count and it was the only extra model I had. I had to proxy another cruiser.

We're now switching from 1K to 800 point MFV for casual play, and am considering the following list. Any Input is welcome.

285: 1 x Battleship, Nausicaa
-1 Turn +10
+2 MN +5
Torp to Fore +10
Double Mines +10
Primary to Scatter +5
Split Fire +5
High Energy MAR +5
3 Escorts +45

390: 2 x Cruiser Squadrons (3 ships)
Secured Bulkheads +5

120: 2 x Frigate Squadrons (3 Ships)

Assuming you just wrote the numbers wrong, that's a traditional 800 point fleet.... But maybe you're not taking...

Naussica with 3x Escorts

2x3 Cruisers

2x3 Frigates

That's 765, leaving 35 points to upgrade the Battleship. Double-Mines, +2 Mn, -1" TL, and either Open Fore Torps or Remove Ablative is a good way to go.

dindrenzi lose too much without a battleship the carriers don't last long enough and give up a lot of battle log, the legion is a very good half way point if you want more srs but is hard to get a hold of

I also probably wouldn't go with secured bulkheads as boarding is generally rare and you shouldn't be that close to anyone for them to be useful, the points you save can be used to upgrade one of your frigate squads to corvettes

You have to admire the 'Drenze for being able to field all those guns in just 800 points. It's all hard hitting and reasonably survivable. Tough nut to crack! The multiple cruiser squads backed by the Naussica cannon with extra scatter on top. Evil

OK thanks for the inputs. On a final note I currently don't own a Praetorian. Is it worth the investment or will the Nausicaa and Conqueror do the jobs just as well? (I have 1 x Nausicaa and 1 x Conqueror)

The Naussica has a few things going for it over the Praetorian, namely:

1) Cheaper (As far as I'm concerned, the Praetorian starts at 230 for 5 Wings)

2) Mines (Praetorians hate it when things shunt behind it)

3) Scatter Gunrack

4) Bigger Kinetic AD

Also, nothing wrong with proxying the Praetorian in a few games with your Naussica.

It may be just me but I've found the cheaper battleships to be very useful. For two reasons.

1) They're cheaper.. More upgrades or points towards another T3 squad.

2) When all that's being taken T1 wise is the latest and greatest (and considerably more expensive, as they all seem to have expensive upgrades to perform 'that' function), then nobody expects to see them.

Players get used to fighting the Tyrant, Anarchist and Friends, then get a bit of a shock when an Apollo or Eliminator smashes in and hits you with a good fore punch then in the case of the Eliminator turns on a Dime and hits you again !. Nuclear in the case of the Apollo..

Cyber's great an all but it's not reliable (Anarchist). The Praetorian's a good ship but lacks the smash factor of the Nausicaa.
