800 point. new player

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. As stated above am a new player to dystopian wars.

At my local club we are playing the campaign with a limit of 800 points for your fleet. Naval only.

I'm looking for advice. Which ships work better with others? Are there any I should avoid unless I play in particular fashion?

As it is I have been building fleets blind and will be coming up against enemies soon.

In practice I fought well with a pair of fresnels aristotle and the thales diogenes as littlen

I should mention. I liked the look of the aronax so alot of my current fleets have 1 of them floating around haha.

Anyway. Any advice on tactics. 800 point fleets would be most welcome.

Thanks

There doesn't seem to be many restrictions that I'm aware of.

I'm not the only collector of COA so I believe most if not all the ships are available. I'm not exactly spending lots at the moment either so I can buy what I need.

I have myself. The Hunter flotilla. Epicurus. Battle flotilla. One of the carriers and an orb

If you may get the models, I made a quick list for you to start:

E-Turret-Aristotele seems like a good start. If you have it, add a Kepler as an attachment. This combination is our go-to carrier//long-range fighter.

As you liked them, there is not much wrong with taking two Fresnel. Either link all systems on them to target a large, or link the weapons on one of them to target a medium. They do fall apart quite easy, though, and are (as all of the CoA) susceptible to boarding.

Thus, take a Zeno. At 800p, more than one Corvette rush seems improbable. The particle accelerator of a Zeno (and maybe its mines) might take the sting out of it, and it has such beautiful broadsides for some added fun. 5 elite AP are nothing to sneeze at, too.

I also like the Diogenes, full squad. They reliably remove one enemy small each turn with torps, and if the enemy smalls come to close, their speed and broadsides are helpful.

And in order to have some boarding capacity beside the Zeno, 5 Thales.

The problem with using an Aristotle + Kepler specialist squadron is that you still require 1 core naval large. Which is quite difficult for a 800point game.

You could consider:
1 Aristotle (E-Turret)
2 Fresnels
2 Zenos
4 Diogenes
5 Thales

This puts you at 785 points. You can keep the Aristotle + Fresnels + Diogenes in the back for the first 1-2 turns for superior long range sniping (this should force your opponent to come to you). This part of the fleet is however very susceptible to boarding, but with proper support/flanking from your 2 zeno's, any hostile corvettes should find it extremely difficult to ever come close.

A squadron with an attachment is completely different to a specialist squadron. The Aristotle+Kepler is just as valid as an Aristotle+Galens. In either of these, it's only the attachments that do not count towards the "compulsory" choices

These sound really good guys.

I'm getting a great idea of which way I should head. Noting the long range and using the zenos is what I need to hear and have ideas about.

Does anyone use just flyers?

I'd suggest if you are going to run 2 squads of smalls. Make them both corvettes. The frigates are a bit lack luster even against smalls. Corvettes could take the smalls out and double as a boarding threat. At such a low point game, a 2 squad corvette rush from the CoA can be pretty surprising for our enemies.
