Having a lot of trouble against Relthoza

Recommended Posts

I'm a pretty new player and need help against the spider people. I always get wrecked by them. My battle fleet is usually as follows:

Tyrant

+3 wing capacity

+2 PD

Shield Projector

Bigger Batteries

3 interceptors

3 Guardians

2 Battlecruisers

-decimator warheads

-countermeasures

1 Heavycruiser

+1" move

2 Cruisers

+1 HP

Weapon Shielding

Nuclear Torpedoes

3 Destroyers

-nuclear fore weapons upgrade

4 Misisonary frigates

4 Armsmen frigates

My opponent likes to do SRS spam, and I find that I really have a hard time with that. There just never seems to be enough PD to stop them from doing something horrible. Stealth and cloaking field also have to be the most annoying abilities ever, I pretty much have to give him the alpha strike every time. Shooting torpedoes helps a little with the cloak, but they still get their full PD so it's still pretty hard to actually hurt him before he drops cloak.

I usually shunt in the battlecruisers to get them nice and close, and they always wreck face. Really like that unit. I like to keep the rest of the fleet pretty close to the tyrant to really take advantage of the bigger batteries rule.

It just really seems like when it comes down to it, he throws more AD than I do and has way better defensive tech than I do.

If you're having a hard time with SRS you may want to invest in a carrier.

The best thing you can do about his cloak is to play the waiting game and throw torpedoes until he gets close and drops the defensive stuff. That being said you should try the battlecruisers with nuclear torpedo spook.

Castle up in a corner around your destroyers and let him come to you.

How much are you using Reserves?

Also, I think the best way for Terrans to counter Relthoza is to turtle up. Don't spread around the board, but keep your force together and coordinated. Use the Frigates to screen against SRS (every PD shot counts) and don't allow him to fire with Port/Starboard weapons when he decloaks. In theory, you should be able to wipe out any unit which decloaks before it can activate again.

Aside from what the others have said (which I agree with), this is one of those times where I think the Ares Carrier combined with a pair of Cruiser accompaniments would make a lot of sense.  The carrier with the pair of cruisers provide the same number of nuclear torpedoes as a regular cruiser squadron (with the torpedoes being unaffected by cloak), and the nuclear coherence effect being effective against SRSs.  The Ares carrier's own SRS is pretty variable, but I'd suggest a mix of interceptors and bombers.

Another option to potentially consider is the Hawker Regent-class Carrier.  While it carries fewer SRSs and lacks nuclear torpedoes, it also has direct fire nuclear weapons and Cyber warfare weapons.  It's possible to hack down and disable the cloak with the cyber warfare weapon, which eliminates the main Relthoza defenes against direct fire weapons.  If the cyberwarfare weapon doesn't hit the cloaking device, there's a good chance it'll disable the ship's point defense systems, making it more vulnerable to torpedo fire or SRS attacks.  The Regent's direct fire nuclear weapons aren't affected by either point defense or SRS, but they're a little weaker than the combined nuclear torpedo attack of a full cruiser squadron (or carrier with cruiser accompaniment), and they are shorter in range.  But then again, the carrier also doesn't cost as much as either option...

Nukes aren't too useful against Relthoza, as a smart Relthozan Admiral (like Hive) will use Split Berth to extend Attack Run range, and likely never give the opportunity to splash Tokens with Nuclear explosions. However, it is a good counter for all the Frigate Accompanyments they are likely to bring.

I never noticed how effective Cyberwarfare is against Relthoza defenses. Any result of 3+ will ruin their day.

A carrier could help you with the SRS issues. The Ares has more wings available to it than any other Kurak carrier (that I know of), and Deck Crews, which will help your tokens stick around. Carrier Battle Groups of an Ares and one or two Teutons (I prefer one, because it's cheaper and I'm a cheapskate when it comes to Tier 1 Squadrons) carrying a Fighter and Interceptor token can make a mess of things. Two fighter tokens are okay for bullying Tier 3s and limited range defence (this is how I tend to use my Carrier Group, bully Tier 3 squadrons and occasionally attack Tier 2 squadrons). Bombers and Interceptors can cause chaos. The other ship choice I'd recommend is ditch the one Gun-Cruiser and take a full squadron of regular cruisers.

Against a cloak heavy faction, torpedoes and any other Indirect Weapons you may have access to are your best friend. Nuclear torpedoes can be nasty, they may also suck, and spacing ships out really cuts on the splash damage; it can make enemy formations rather inflexible though. Hawker ships with Cyberwarfare can be useful for shutting cloaks down, or knocking out PD. People are now gonna hate me when I say Tarakians can also be useful. Grav Guns ignore Shields, PD and because they're Indirect, Cloaks (the more I think about it, Tarakians seem to be the Kurak answer to just about any Zenian problems you may have).

Tactically, I've waited for the Relthoza to come to me, firing torpedoes to bait them into rushing towards my fleet (Terran torpedo dice, with the exception of our Battle Cruisers drop considerably at closer ranges). Using cover will help with this. Relthoza need to be close for their Primaries to be really effective, and also for boarding. Use it against them. Draw them in, wait for them to drop cloaks, and unload with everything you've got. Broadsides, turrets, torpedoes, Derp Cannons, fluffy kittens, Katie Hopkins, kitchen sinks, all of it. Relthoza are sort of like Terrans in that their "shields", cloaks, are their defence, and without it they can be incredibly fragile.

As a Directorate player, I try to use the terrain to my advantage against Relthoza. Hiding behind asteroid fields further cuts their fire power. Also take advantage of the gas clouds effect. I usually full stop my frigates in a gas cloud. Disorder only happens rarely and making them hit you on 6's is even better.

Suggestion- Rel are like, the only fleet you will regularly outpace, and you have more turret and foreward options. If you don't have to advance, don't- you can seriously screw up the Rel deployment by making moves laterally across the table, kind of drawing out the conflict and keeping those broadsides at bay longer. As for wings, yeah, we love those, haha. Remember that carriers tend towards high PD as well as access to Interceptors. A carrier in your battle line can go a long way.

I am going to pick on your list a little bit, cause that looks like the main problem.  Generally speaking strategy he's going to be weak to your torps as he cloaks, and weak to your beams once he uncloaks.  So use that to your advantage, draw him out and pick on one squad of his at a time.

1. Start with your battlecruisers on the table.  Hide them behind terrain until he gets close.  Lobbing nuclear torps with spook at cloaked enemies is awesome.

2. Give your Tyrant -1 TL, it will help keep him at a distance and safe from the approach

3. Ditch that heavy cruiser and the destroyers too.  You cannot do squat with those destroyers against relthoza, until it's too late and he's decloaked in your face.

4. Invest in a carrier.  Get 3 more (or even 6) interceptors and 6 bombers.

5. Lose the escorts and replace them with Aquan escorts.  Minefields in front of cloaked ships being deployed is hilarious.

Good luck! :);)
