Specialist Group Squadrons

Recommended Posts

Look! Something new! Okay, something mentioned 2 years ago, but still new! This should be exciting :D This should bring new and interesting variation to models that have been lingering on the edge...

... or maybe not.

Theta Squadron

Get 2 e-turret Platos, then stick a Fresnel in there.

Cost: 210 points.

Purpose: I guess e-weaponry sniping. Oh, and using up that third Fresnel that people might have.

Is it good: Well, it all links up for 16/16/16/16 AD, which is never a bad thing. Or splits for... erm... a 10 and an 8 AD shot?

Problems: 2 Fresnels are cheaper by 10 points and kick out the same amount of firepower whilst being generally more resilient.

Sigma Squadron

Ever wanted to escort a Zeno? Well now you can! Slap 3 Galens into a squadron of 1 Zeno.

Cost:165 pts

Purpose: erm...

Is it good: Well, linking their AD makes for a 18/13/4/2, which is very respectable for the points of a pocket battleship. Boarding potential is a bit weird. I could see this unit going to beat up battlecruisers perhaps?

Problems: erm...

Omega Squadron

Think those Keplers lack punch? want to keep them extra safe and secure? Want to spend a hell of a lot of points? Take 2 Keplers and season them with 2 Cleomedes cruisers.

Cost: 350 points

Purpose: Looking big, scary and pretending to be sharks.

Is it good: Keplers are vulnerable, giving them squadron mates will definitely make them tougher, and with e-turrets the squadron will put out a fair amount of hurt  (14/14/14/14 or two shots of 9/9/9/9)

Problems: 350 points...

Omicron Squadron

I am Epicurus! Leader of the squadron Omicron persei 8! 2 Capeks and an Epicurus make up this slightly bewildering squadron.

Cost: 320, or 330 with e-turret epicurus

Purpose: Floating around whilst arguing which range band it wants to be in.

Is it good: My first thought was yes! E-turret Epicurus with some energy guns from the Capeks would have been very nice. But then the Capeks changed into schizophrenic saucers. With RB1/2 energy guns, they will want to be close to the enemy with their buddy the Epicurus (with e-turrets what will be 12 AD close up) but Capeks are very very veeeeeeeery squishy and tend to die very very swiftly, so want to stand back and snipe with rockets... which the Epicurus does not have. Epi has broadsides that are good up close, Epi likes to launch drones that, especially now they are slower, really want to be up close.

Problems: multiple personality disorder.

Rho Aerial Squadron

Want some more mines with that? Ptolemy with 3 Aleas will have you sorted in no time.

Cost: 155 pts

Purpose: mining things whilst refusing to die.

Is it good: Erm... maybe. Possibly. Probably? 5 mines from the squadron per turn, with the Aleas mostly being hit only on 6s and the Ptolemy having that facility too. This is a very nice half-way point between 2 and three Ptolemys actually, for when you want mines but don't quite have the points. Strong ack ack from the squadron too. This one, I like :D Also, some people only own 2 Ptolemys anyway...

Problems: 3 Ptolemies are flat out better, but then they cost more points. Its a nice balance :)

I must be missing something on a lot of them, but I think these are generally a bit meh. I thought the specialist squadrons might give them special MARs to go with them. Hunter Aerial for the Omicron squadron, terror tactics for the Sigma squadron, evasive maneuvers +1 for the Omega squadron etc etc.

Am I missing something?

I don't get the Theta Squadron.

Isn't this the same as two fresnels but more unwieldy and 10pts more expensive?

Sigma Squadron looks like a nice brawler.

One thing it does give you is some broadsides as well as non capital for sniping smalls that get too close. Slightly better aa and cc too. Still not sure i'd use it but there you go

I think I'll be making use of the Sigma, a lone Zeno does pretty well but I've had concerns over its vulnerability all alone in the big ocean.

Galens add a little protection from a few different sources, and got a bit cheaper.

I think I might use the Theta squadron. I like the Platos, they're not bad as a pair, but two of them is somewhat lacking for main weapon firepower. Adding a Fresnel makes them a good hitter over distance, while still letting them plink smalls. Also gives up much less to boarding, as the Platos cannot be prized, being non-capital.

I like the rho squadron. It means that my 4th ptolemy now gets to see the battlefield for the first time in ages, the Aleas get to escort something faster than a brick, and the squadron makes a good strategic deployment element.

That mine layer element is very, very nasty- I've been using and facing it, mainly on land quite a bit, and it  performs two functions very well.

Mines funnel smalls and mediums for PA shots

Being very hard to kill-  the best counter I've found, other than fighters, is devastating ordnance shots- if you need 6's to hit, you might as well have those 6's hurt. If it is in advanced, and other stuff is shielded, hidden by terrain, or simply at longer range, it is often the best available target!

I think you summed it up pretty well. All these formations just need ..... Something.

Some are simply bad combos: Omega, Omicron, where other unit combos would synergies far better.

Others definitely need some MARs to make them a thing worth trying. Mostly they seem to be a great way to reduce ur activations and leave you tactically weaker.

Posted this in new units.

How about using our poor Daedalus and pair it up with another - drop 4 mines per turn could be fun at controlling the seas.
