Balance in Return of the Overseers?

Recommended Posts

I am dystopian wars player and pleased by the balance of that system.

I like the models in the 2 player box "Return of the Overseers".

I would like to start this system with a friend (who prefers space to alternative history).

How fair are the included models in this box balanced against each other?

Do i have to buy additional models to restore balance because maybe aquan has the counter models against the included diratorate models?

I want to have two FSA fleets with fix lists and let my guest choose one of the fleet/list.

I wouldn't be afraid about any disbalances. What I found out though is that Directorate force from the box can go from 650 (with only few upgrades) to 750 (all possible upgrades) points where Aquan force can go only up to 660 with full upgrades. If you manage to get your hands on extra 2 Directorate Frigates or 3 Escorts you easily go up to 800. Where with Aquans you need an extra squadron. It is a good start and you can easily create two lists at 650 points without any issues for both factions.

I wouldn't worry about balance concerns very much, but the point disparity between forces concerns me.

What Kurgan said makes me think the best advice is to suggest purchases to convert the Boxed Set forces into 800 point fleets which can fight each other effectively. What is the bare-bones cost for each force in the Boxed Set, after buying all Wings?

I'm guessing expanding both fleets with the Frigate/Small boxes set is the easy solution.

the 2 player boxed set is designed/balanced for the storybook scenarios.

You can both field 650-660 pt lists however that is with Maxed out Aquans and Minimized Directorate, but it works.

I guess what im saying is that its not unbalanced, but its also not a set you would want to play more than 6-8 games with before adding more models.

(as great as the terrain asteroids are, im honestly a much bigger fan of Patrol Fleets for new players)

You either aren’t going to like the game, in which case you won’t play it often enough for any balance issues to become a nuisance, or you are going to like the game, in which case you’ll want to add choices soon, enabling you to rectify any balance issues that may exist between the 2 player box fleets.

So don't worry indeed ;)

I will say in terms of raw fire power the directorate have more while the aquans rely on difficult target and laser bending shenanigans strange since normally the directorate use trickery and the aquans use speed/mines/shields as an aquan player I find it a strange 'starter' fleet as it does have many of our strengths on one ship the mediums are unique and nothing like the rest of the fleet, small unit sizes and gimicks but hey why not have some variety!

eventually adding a patrol fleet to each (aqans in particular) is a great expansion

Directorate could branch out get a cruiser box and something else as getting a 2nd battleship is viable, but not as important

The balance on the anarchist is horrible, I don't know how the aquans in the box are supposed to beat that, why does it even have 9hps.

It's a Battle Ship, that is why it has 9HPs.

I guess you have never faced a cloaked Nexus/Brood BB. It has 9HP.

Both Dindrenzi BBs have 10HP.

Both Terran BBs have 8HP, but they both have or can gain 3 Shields.

What I'm saying, they are all pretty well balanced. I can not recall any one screaming bloody murder about any of the BBs being OP.

Now, one or two of them might be considered noticeably weaker....

It was never intended to be a one-on-one fight? You are dealing with a heavy carrier versus a full-blown battleship. I find them to be very balanced for their relative point costs. That is why the Aquan one costs less…

The Anarchist is a dangerous opponent, especially in the boarding assault department. Pump enough fire into from the side or rear (or even the front if you have the AD to do it) and it should die. My frakking useless Teutons put one down the other day, after it had gone and stolen my frakking Tyrant! Most battleships have 8 to 10 HP, with Dindrenzi sitting on the 10 HP end of the scale. Some (like the Tarakian BB) can get Self Repair. Shoot the frakkers enough and they'll go pop most of the time, or just kill off enemy cruisers and frigates and watch that enemy battleship squirm (I've done this to the Dindrenzi so many times now...).

the thing I found is that even at 3 HP left the archanist still has a decent cyber warfare and torp and still 100% effective bording
