118th "Shattered Heart" (Ken's Dindrenzi)

Recommended Posts

So bit the bullet and got myself a Dindrenzi Core Helix, with my order of Polish Naval and Aerial.

First order of business was to cut off the god awful resin cast peg for the hover tanks. Cut off the nub, drilled through the stand, and stuck a flight peg into it (From the cut-off stems of my Polish skimmers). They look better with just that quick change.

The same way I tackled my Armada force, I primed them black, then masked off some stripes for my tanks, and primed again with a light dusting of red. The pre-shade helps tremendously when I paint on the layers. Scheme will proceed as before, but probably more silvers, and will OSL the gun glows.

Will update as much as I can

Sorry it took a bit folks. Work was pretty much full steam ahead most times, so my painting time got cut by a considerable amount. Got time this morning to paint at least the Kratos.

Been happy with the results so far, and pretty much nailed down what I want for the rest of the helix.

Still need to edge highlight the black portions at the top (The bottom is pretty much done), and I'll be able to matte spray it to finish. Still deciding if I want to glue it down to the peg or just magnetize, but I'll worry about that later.

Looks great. What spray did you use for the red?

Also do you game in Toronto?

I used Army Painter - Dragon Red. Just a light dusting off it, not to fully cover the initial black primer.

No, unfortunately, my home base is in Calgary. If you do visit though, I'll be up for some games, likewise if I swing by your neck of the woods :)

Well done I like what I see.  Keep up the hard work.

Appreciate the kinds words. Will keep you posted :)

Just a minor update:

Just wanted to share a more finalized version of the scheme, and something that'll be consistent throughout the Core Helix.

Kratos is 100% done. I'm at 60% with the Circe and Letos, and the Eris' are getting their metals painted up (Just taking me time on deciding which areas to pick out)

Anyways, enjoy!

Decided to just glue them on the flight pegs. Storing them wont be a problem anyways.

Also, just got my heavy armour helix, and already pondering on how to paint them (Always planned to paint the different helix in "slightly" different schemes...to make it easier for me on helix activations).

great work and thanks for the pics.

Perfect! :)

Thanks folks! :)

While I'm at it, might as well post progress:

Finished the Circe and the Letos, and I found that my painting time per piece is getting shorter and shorter. Getting used to the flow when doing the edge highlights, so it is getting less tedious. Eyes still getting crossed at times, but I guess its my fault for painting late in the evening :P

Total time for these guys were 4 hrs spread into 2 sessions.

As it stand, here's whats done:

16830048178_909121e9bf_z.jpg

Next are the Eris, and after that the Nyx infantry (Actually excited to start these) and the Drop pods. Got myself a Heavy helix a few days back, so I still have some stuff to paint for planetfall after the core. I have another core and a levi on the pipeline as well. Just need to wait for it to drop at my FLGS.

...and I still have a ton of stuff to paint for DW wahhhhhhhhh!

Love the paint scheme. I have a friend who plays Dindrenzi who does something similar but yours is much nicer. I was curious how you do the blue parts?

Thanks bud!

For the blues, I did the following no nonsense, fool-proof way of doing blue glow:

Start with a Teclis Blue (or any light blue) base, you can make it as messy or neat as you can.

16427754963_6f1d890bcb.jpg16860363540_546af1b6de.jpg

Add a mix of white to the base blue (50-50), and apply it the raised areas. (peaked edges, in case of the first example below). (A wee bit hard to see :P)

16862058969_9bb3a04e17.jpg16860124988_efa1eacd00.jpg

Then finally apply straight white as an edge highlight or light drybrush.

16860111878_2e1df5912b.jpg17046435442_35a2e0f4dd.jpg

..and that's it! Pretty painless right?

Didn't really have to worry much of how clean I do the blue, as the majority of it is under the model.

And with that, an update as well. (Because of the stupid image limit, I had to double post, grumble grumble grumble...)

Done the 3 Eris', which puts the mobile armoured section of the half-core done.

This is what I currently have. It's been slow going, but it is at a consistent pace. Next are the Nyx infantry and their drop pods. After that is the Heavy helix.

Let me know what you guys think!

Update:

Just finished 8 bases of Nyx Infantry, and with that I'm slowly seeing the light...for the Core Helix anyways.

Did the typical red base, and black wash. After which, I edge highlight to a progressive red-white mix, and touched up with blue glow. Bases as standard.

Enjoy :)

Damn, this is pretty fantastic work. I'm torn between doing Dindrenzi and Directorate. I play Dindrenzi in Armada (but have a small Direcotrate fleet as well) and your models are making the argument to play them in both systems easier to make. The only problem is, I really am not a fan of the Dindrenzi Leviathan.

Either way. These look fantastic. Nice work.

Holy testickle tuesday! I haven't seen anyone do the little T-visors on them yet, you need like the Jenga hands of Jesus himself to pull that off. You have inspired me to have a whack at it now. How did you do the dry cracks on the base?

You made my day dude! "Jenga hand of Jesus" *chuckle snort*

Thanks for the good words guys. To answer your question, I just used Agrellan earth from GW. Paint on thick then it'll crack when dry. Pretty good stuff! I stockpiled on the thing.

Your the first person I seen use this stuff. It really looks great. I will need to get some.

Question?

It looks like you primed in black. Did you just painted over the black primer? Did you use any other colors on the base or is it all Agrellan Earth?

Paint a base color first. Agellan Earth tends to stick itself to the paint underneath, ad rip it part. This does not happen to primer though, but you wouldn't want your primer peeking through, right?

Thanks what colors did you use (Basecoat, primer)?

If you mean for just the basing:

  • Black primer ( used red primer too, for the blocked off design I did)
  • I basecoated Mornfang brown (or any basic brown colour, and let it dry)
  • Did a layer of Agrellan Earth, put it on thick if you want larger cracks, thin for smaller crack. If you lay it down too thin though, it wont crack.
  • When fully dry and happy with the amount of cracks, layer on heavily a dark brown wash
  • When the wash is dry, dry brush on an off-white (like Bleached bone)
  • Now admire, and thank ckpmax1108 in your heart for the tips hehehe  :)

Minor Update:

Basecoated (well...base-sprayed) my Heavy Helix. Did the masking a bit differently from my core to differentiate the Helix with them.

16976321930_4b4c2f2353_c.jpg

Masked them to have 3 paralel dark sections running along the tanks, unlike the core that has them in a chevron pattern running across.

Shown here is the difference between the Circe tanks
