Which Kurak Alliance Carrier

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have a core fleet box of Hawker Industries and I have supplemented it with the Veydreth Prowler Gunships, two Veydreth Hunter Class Destroyers and the Ganak Battleship. Most of these decisions were based off of aesthetics. Now I am looking to expand and get a Carrier and trying to decide on which one to go with. The Ryushi carriers are a natural selection, however only the Battle Carrier is available and they can only be escorted by Cruisers which makes the box set quite expensive if one is playing a 600-800 pt match. The other options are the regular carriers from Hawker and Ryushi, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Both the Hawker Carrier and Ryushi Onnisha are solid choices.

If it makes the decision any easier the Regent doesn't have a model yet, meaning you could only field it as a proxy.

It also looks like you can't buy the Onnisha Carrier separately either, only in a Patrol fleet box.

Shopping around on the internet or LGS you might be able to find an Onnisha available separately.

A good way to get a feel for the models would be to proxy them in a few games, assuming your opponent is happy to let you.

The Hawker one has one less HP than any other carrier (they did graciously let you buy a HP upgrade to get it to the same HP as every other carriers STARTS with) and starts with only 1 shield with no way to upgrade. It is also slow and one of the most expensive carriers in the game right now. Unless you're dead set on running pure Hawker I'd suggest to never even look on the page that has that joke of a ship.

If you purchase the additional SRS capacity hardpoint you could field 6x Bombers and 3x Interceptors, which will dramatically increase the Onnisha's defence against torps and boarding, and with the capacity for 3 Shields and DR6, CR9 it is almost as tough as any BB. The CR will be it's main weakness.

The advantage those Cruisers give you however is a high AD broadside but it comes at quite the cost for the total package.

Well, I am not a hater, as I did try the Regent in various configurations. I found only those two options acceptable. I do own a lot of Kurak ships though, and tried different combinations, some of them better, than the Regent.

Commodore- I'm not a hater, but literally 3 pages after the Regent is the Ryushi Onnishi, with better DR, 1 more HP (Regent has to pay 10pts for the same HP of 7) and 2 more PD in return for lower CP and 1 less AP. It has better torpedoes, beam broadsides AND kinetic fore gun. It only does 18AD wiith two cruisers attached, but it's 18AD of beams. It also has bigger batteries standard, and can have 1 extra shield. The main downside is 2 less wings if you don't buy an upgrade. On the other hand, it's 10pts cheaper. So for 120pts it's still tougher than 140pts model. If you're not hell-bent on running pure Hawker there is no reason to ever field the Regent now.

The Errata says the Regent should have 7HP as standard so the extra 10pts takes it up to 8. I'm intending to try a Hawker carrier group with torpedo heavy Terrans to shunt in with cyber weapons and go for PD.

I've tried out the Regent a few times, and I haven't found it to be terribly impressive in most situations. It's tanky with the extra hull, but in comparison to the Onnisha, its easier to damage and more expensive. The lower DR and single shield means that it has a hard time not getting kicked around a bunch. When you add in the extra HP and the Cyber weapons, its clocks in at a whopping 160 pts even before you get to SRS or weapon shielding! Admittedly, you don't have to take either option, but then the Regent comes up short in pretty much all respects. It does pack a pretty solid punch on its own though, with 11 dice when using broadsides and turrets. Add a couple of cruisers in and you're hitting well above your weight-class even before the SRS get involved!
