New To Britannia In A Very Competitive Area

Recommended Posts

Hey there. I've just taken the plunge into Dystopian Wars, and due to some lucky deals, I was able to pick up 2 Kingdom of Britannia starter sets, 2 Empire of the Blazing Sun starter sets, and Avenger / Tenkei carriers as well. I've played a few games with the starter boxes to get used to the rules, but the players in my club are all very competitve and are fielding deadly lists of doom. I understand that the starter sets aren't always the best because the cruisers and frigates are generally looked down on, but what are some of the more competitive units Britannia can field? I was hoping to do an all air list, but I don't know if KoB could even pull that off, so I was thinking a combined naval/air dominance works best judging from my brief glance through the rulebook.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

The Tribal cruiser is not great, but the Attacker frigate is very solid. It's an excellent small unit and can absolutely pull its weight.

Your best units:

Majesty. Very difficult to sink, massive firepower. Run it with double shields. Feel free to spam away if you're in a competitive environment, two of these guys are just a nightmare.

Agincourt. Best medium model afloat as far as I'm concerned. Very tough for its points and with excellent fire.

Orion. Very dangerous but fragile, so screen them until you can deliver a knockout punch.

You have a lot of other models that are really good, including the Attacker (probably the best frigate), Avenger (excellent torpedo platform), Doncaster (great against naval targets), and Ruler (not the best battleship but quite good, especially while hunting smaller models).

Others can comment better on degenerate Britannian lists but I think they normally involve a couple of Majesties, something to fill the medium slot, and then loads of Attackers and Orions.

Thanks for the information. :) I think I'm going to have to rethink what I want to do slightly. KoB it seems are going to be my naval force with air support, and EotBS will be my air force with naval support.

As I'm only maybe playing 1000 - 1500 points two Majesty dreadnoughts might kill me on activations, so I'll maybe only pick up one. I plan to max out on two full squadrons of Merlins for some anti air punch, and maybe another pack of Doncasters for some anti naval punch, pick up an Illustrious, and of course pick up some Agincourts and Orions as was mentioned.

Definately more Doncasters,

A very good frigate/destroyer killer, if your opponent is running 2 DN's, they will destroy his/her light squadrons.

This will reduce his/her activations and the number of cards in their hand.

As stated above, KoB frigates are your workhorse unit, but other important units are:

Doncasters: slaughters enemy small units (RB4 + non-Capital = dead small/fast units). Secondary role as your main AA unit (5 AA die each is some of the best we have).

DN: a real pain to kill, but firepower drops off rapidly with damage.

BB: as DN. Best used to support your unshielded small/medium units (giving them 1 shield die). Two of them can take down an enemy DN in two turns. Does require support by Escorts and something else to distract enemy capitals away for first two turns. If you can sneak one into RB1 with "Barrage from Hell", you get 36!!!! linked die.

TF Dive Bombers: with Extra AA, you don't usually need fighters if you have these; spam every available TF wing with them.

Mediocre units (good if used properly):

Cruiser: with two turrets, must be supported by a BB. With 1 turret and shield can be used as a boarding threat (but the Gunship outshines it in every area, otherwise).

Vanguard: psych warfare choice. The ramming is lackluster, but the enemy must honour the threat in case you get lucky. Good for chewing up sea-based fortifications.

Dive bombers cannot CAP any longer so this is not true.

The vanguard can be hit on normal to hit numbers by TFT until spartan changes something so an opponent that knows this can simply send a wing and take the easy VP.

NECROMANCY!

Now, couple of years later and after the new orbat I would like to know your opinion on Kob chances in a very competitive area.

We are going to have a tournament next month in Prague. If you were going, what list would you field? I am looking for inspiration :-)

Conditions are:

* 1000 points naval OR aerial core

* allies allowed

* no dread-bots or dread-forts :-)

* max. 12 carrier points in the list

* max. 12 squadron supports in the list (things like tiny boats/u-boats you get for free with some models)

Thanks, I would really like to know your opinion on Kob chances in such tournament.

For me it would be

Vengeance with Escorts

3 Vanguards (×2)

5 Valiants

5 Merlins

Illustrious with Shield (or Regent with Guardian)

I understand Thyphs is aiming for raw firepower and plenty of activations which can deal with everything. I am not sure how would your list cope with all aerial lists or Russians with jammers... Any ideas?

Sub based list is fun to try, it presents a real challenge to certain factions... but against an aerial core then it has no chance. Against russian jammers, go for 70%, torp the units without jammers and then board whichever target will bring you to the required % and hope your force survives the turn. Like I said, fun to try but not reliable in my opinion.

My 1k pure KoB list might go something like:

Regent + shield

Vengeance

Halifax

3x Tribals

3x Vanguard

3x Stalwart

How to play like A sir

Play with what looks cool.

Get your teeth kicked in.

Learn how not to get your teeth kicked in.

Kick your opponents teeth in.

Profit.

This is how I run my lists. I love the look of the submarines, so I will almost always run a Vengeance, 3 Vanguards, and 5 Valiants, with the rest of my choices as "support" for them. If you notice, my above list has Escorts accompanying my Vengeance. This is mainly for dealing with pesky aircraft that like to try and take advantage of submarines not having much AA. The Merlins are there for the same reason, and to protect my SAWs

Would you start with dive bombers in this list or fighters?

hmm tough one for KOB

I would look at something like

Ruler

Regent

Jhasa

3 Tribals

5 Veerans

that leaves 125 for either a Halifax/Lord Hood / Canda or another squad of smalls.

And your list if you had to play without allies?
