Test scheme for my CoA fleet

  2. I painted one of my Diogenes as a test the other night (the grilled engine section at the rear isn't done yet - it will be green). Apologies for the quality of the photo and the size of the image - I'll take another shot once it's fully complete and repost. Hopefully this scheme will work on the larger models as well - there's only one way to find out! Ok - a couple of better shots now it's completed: Updated with a shot of my Aristotle, now painted...

A test of the scheme I'll be using for my CoA fleet - the grilled engine at the rear is yet to be painted (It will be green).

  4. I'm also mildly interested in the design of the two flags. The Royal Australia flag - I'd have liked some form of special 4 or 5 pointed star (the states, or the states and New Zealand). While the Commonwealth flag is also interesting - there could be a background story as to why the flag has a black background - perhaps as a reference to a burned piece of paper (loyalty demand/citizenship papers), original flag (of the rebellion) or similar. I'd similarly like to see a special 3 pointed star or symbol in the center of the Commonwealth flag - some reference to indigenous Australians could be interesting as well. In any case - the models look fantastic, I'll be definitely be picking these up at some point in the near future. Good to see Australia released as a fleet! I wonder whether they'll be getting any air units in the future?
  5. Ah - well wherever it s from I absolutely love the intro - really thematic - as a CoA player I think it's especially awesome!
  6. Great episode - really enjoyed it. Keep up the fantastic work!
  7. I'd say 20,000 leagues under the sea for the intro quote. As a player of the CoA I love the intro!
  8. I enjoyed this episode - good discussion. I'm glad you read the rule you were discussing - that crystallised it. Really enjoyed listening. My only gripe would be that some of the spoken parts are very quiet - but levelling the audio might help with that. Aside from that minor gripe I really liked the banter, the depth of conversation etc. Keep up the great work. Cheers, Giles. Edit: Is it possible to break your podcast into a separate feed from your normal blog feed?
  9. Feedburner is a good feed host - and it provides stats etc, which can be useful or fun. The key is having a webspace to host the audio files. I really recommend Libsyn - it costs money, but it's very good. You might be able to pick up some sponsorship to cover the cost of hosting - but you need to be aware of your file sizes/regularity if you go with the cheapest option. Another interesting option could be: http://archive.org/details/audio - as file host, and feedburner or similar as the RSS. I haven't really investigated that though. Having said that - I can find it in iTunes, so you may already have it sorted through the blog feed...? Cheers, Giles.
  10. Do you have a dedicated RSS for the podcast? My podcatcher (Downcast) has trouble distinguishing between your blog posts and podcast episodes. Cheers, Giles.
  11. Thanks for all the advice! I think I'll drop the extra Ptolemys in favour of a pack of Icarus. I might also add a pack of Fresnels into the mix because they look like fun. The reason I had left the Icarus off option B was because I intend to grab the air pack from the Spartan store at some later point - and that comes with 6 Icarus. And the reason I had the Ptolemys was to allow me to field a full unit of them (or two smaller units) - but I'm happy to listen to experience - which seems to suggest that the Ptolemys aren't the best. Thanks for the words of wisdom! I've only played a couple of games - but I'm really enjoying it. Very much looking forward to playing more! Cheers, Giles.
  12. I have the boxed CoA Naval set (along with an Epicurus), and am looking at my next order... I want to flesh out my fleet a little and I currently have two options kicking around in my mind: a) The Aerial Pack (from the Spartan store) and Callimachus or b ) Aronnax x1 pk Galen x1 pk Plutarch x2 pks Ptolemy x1 pk Thales x1 pk Callimachus x1 pk Option a) means I'll be looking at a later third order to flesh out my naval fleet. Option b ) means I'll be looking at a later third order that would probably be the CoA Aerial pack. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions about which might be a better choice (if either)? At the moment I'm kind of favouring the b ) option as it fleshes out my fleet, and I think the Aerial pack would supplement it nicely (something I can worry about later). Right now I'm looking for some fun and fulfilling games, that allow me some variability in my list between games - it's my brother and I (he's playing the Ruskies), so we're not playing too seriously - really just for the enjoyment of it. Thanks for any thoughts or advice! Cheers, Giles.
  13. Love the look of the support box - I hope Spartan roll this out for other factions too!
  14. Haven't listened yet, but am downloading as I type. Great to see a podcast that deals with DW! As for suggestions: Memorable moments from games you've played Painting tips/schemes modelling tips Terrain/table construction rules conversations discussion of upcoming releases strategy conversations scenarios played - ideas for scenarios Anything really! Cheers, Giles.
  15. Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement to get more (I really don't need it - I'm already putting the next order together). Great game! Great fun! Can't wait to play again. Simple as that!
  16. My brother and I managed to get in our first couple (well - one and a half) of learning games this weekend passed. In short - loved it. I wrote some fuller thoughts on my blog (here for anyone who wants to read some rough prose and disjointed rambling), but I really enjoyed the games we played. It was Covenant of Antarctica (my fleet) against the might of the thieving Russians. We really only managed to get a grasp of the rules, but we had a blast. Thanks to all you who take your time to answer questions on the forums here - we had a few pop-up during play and managed to find all the answers pretty quickly. Thanks! Already planning our next purchases... curse you Spartan! Cheers, Giles.
  17. Nooooooo! (said in an appropriately pathetic, on the knees with fists in the air, Darth Vader style). Well, at least I'm edging closer to free shipping on my next order... I don't know whether to say 'thanks' or 'curses'. I can, however, imagine what my wife might choose! Cheers, Giles.
  18. Thankfully - as an ex-roleplayer, I also have plenty of various dice lying about gathering dust! Though nowhere near the number of FSA Michael by the sound of it! Thanks also for the suggestion of micro-dice and markers Bunnahabhain! I'll pull something together - some small cogs would be cool markers (or other industrial/steam-punky type thing). We finally put the order in too - thanks all for your advice! I'll be starting off with the CoA Naval starter and an Epicurus. My brother will be the RC with the Polish-Lithuanian sky ship... and I'm already looking at what my next order will include... (a time dilation orb is definitely on there)! Cheers, Giles.

  20. Ha! We've finally decided just to run with starter sets and a carrier each (and I'm running with the Epicurus) - but we're already talking about the extra units we want to get, which doesn't bode well for the wallet. I'm certainly eyeing off those time dilation orbs! That army builder is fantastic! Cheers, Giles.
  21. Thanks guys, you've really helped us clarify in our minds what we are going to grab. I haven't played many minis games for a good 5-8 years, in that time it's been mostly board games. Before that it was DBM/DBA, Warhammer and the like - more recently - Song of Blades and Heroes. Much appreciated! We love the look of the models, the sound of the setting - so this should be a winner! Hopefully my CoA can thrash his RC - we shall see! Cheers, Giles.
  22. Thanks! We weren't sure whether we'd need the campaign books or not. All the advice has been much appreciated! Cheers, Giles.
  23. My brother and I are going to start collecting Dystopian Wars, we have decided to grab the RC Starter, the CoA starter, a set of 1.1 rules and 2 decks of cards. The Hurricane Season book mentions having rules for the CoA in it - are these covered already in the fleet book in the starter? Is there anything else we'll need in order to start playing? Thanks! Giles.
  24. Would we be better served getting the air sets straight up with the other stuff?
  25. Hi, I'm new to Dystopian Wars, my brother and I are wanting to get into it, but we're unsure as to the best way to start off. After reading through plenty of forums here the consensus seems to be to 'go with what you like the look of'. We're going to collecting the Russian Coalition and the Covenant of Antarctica - does this mix play well together? We're also looking at grabbing the Naval starter fleets for both nations, as well as a carrier each (In this case a Pericles and a Kostroma). Will this be enough to begin with? Will our fleets be roughly competitive with one another? Is there anything else we should consider up front? I should note that we are also looking at getting the Aerial sets a little down the road... Any advice is much appreciated! Cheers, Giles.
