I would humbly suggest the Prussian Empire. Also a fairly straightforward force to play (basically one defensive MAR of Rugged Construction to balance her shields, and one special weapon to learn in the tesla coils - and really, who doesn't want to shoot lightning bolts?!?), and while their aerial battle group doesn't come with bombers (oh, shucks, an excuse to buy more models later to "balance" things out....) just lots of very nice looking blimps - really, the Imperium sky fortress is still one of the most gorgeous and steampunky models in the whole range!

An Errata (as a separate document from the FAQ) might not be a bad idea?

Just a section with bullet points for known errors/typos for the rulebook and than one similar section for each nation.

Reissue the errata each time an updated orbat comes out (or more frequently as typos are caught).

That way you could have an abbreviated change log within the Errata and maybe even leave it for an update.

    To use the example above;

Federated States of America [PDF, 0.3MB] v1.5 – UPDATED: 10-APR-2015
    Princton Gunships - Squadron size is 2-3 models, not 1-2 as listed. The next Errata after an update to that particular Orbat could then read;

Federated States of America [PDF, 0.3MB] v1.6 – UPDATED: 12-OCT-2015
Princton Gunships - Squadron size is 2-3 models, not 1-2 as listed. Correct value shown in v1.6 - UPDATED 12-OCT-2015 and then the next time the FSA orbat is updated (v1.7), the Princeton entry could be deleted from the errata (to keep overall document size down)
    .
Although I twenty-second the motion that a full version to version change log page within the Orbats and the Digi-Admiral is a grand idea.

I remember cruising threads on...another site, and coming across a picture of the Imperium Sky Fortress. As soon as I saw it, I had to know more. It all went downhill for my pocketbook from there - I just couldn't stop buying the gorgeous models. Then came Firestorm Armada, and Planetfall, and Uncharted Seas models, and here we are today. Destitute, smothered in resin but very much content.

Time for a bit of thread resurrection-

"Greetings, Professor Jones, Doctor Smith. I know that it is highly unusual to let outsiders into Antarctic borders, let alone into a secure facility, such as this one."

"Yes. I did wonder why you brought us all the way from New York and London for what looks like a collection of automobiles."

"We brought you both in because you have each noticed evidence of the phenomenon we're researching. Unfortunately, your respective governments, and several others, haven't bothered to acknowledge it beyond issuing strict instructions about the transport and handling of documents."

    "Are those phonographs over there?"

"Yes. We even have playback devices for magnetic tapes. The phenomenon seems to affect all audio recordings, and Svensson over there is seeing what happens when a combined image and sound recording from one of our experimental surveillance devices is subject to the same conditions."

    "Why the automobiles?"

"Oh, right. The automobiles. We have observed that the phenomena only occurs with automobiles, so we are trying different variations. Herbert, over by the blue Fokker sedan, has been finding that there is variation in the audio recordings, but they seem to be affected by the length of the original recording. Longer recordings come up as a combination of what occurs on the shorter recordings."

"Have you figured out what causes the phenomenon?"

"As yet, no. So far, all we can figure out is that any audio recording, whether it is a phonograph or magnetic tape, left inside an automobile for more than a week-"

"...Three days, if under the driver's seat!..."

"Thanks Hikaru! Or, yes, three days, if left under the driver's seat, any audio recording changes from whatever it originally was, to some sort of music."

"I thought it was someone pulling a prank when I first heard it! They were singing about bicycles," said Smith.

"Really? What I heard was an ode of love for their automobile," said Jones.

"Yes, both of those have turned up in our collection of samples. We have found several different songs in our experiments. Hikaru says they're not only the same singer, but also the same musicians. The music is all different, but she got her doctorate in music, so she knows what she's talking about."

"So why did you bring us here, anyway?"

"We know about the phenomenon. You know about the phenomenon. So far, it's harmless to anything but a Mozart enthusiast leaving their phonograph collection in their automobile for a month-"

    "..Like Herb did!.."

    "...Shut up, Hikaru!.."

"Anyway, we can make a profit, selling these. Do you want to join us?"

My first memory of DW is my buddy at the LGS saying "hey Dan check it out BOATS!!" I was meh about it as my table top attitude was turning sour due to that company most of us know and hate.  Since we were all looking into a new game we ended up deciding on DW and I never looked back, CoA was just coming out at the time so I picked them up and have been a proud faithful penguin ever since.

Fondest memory hmmm runner up is my friends raging on me for my 1.1 double Herodotus and an Euclid 1k land list where my Prussian playing friend threw up his hands after the first PA shot in turn 2 (such big bases which is what the PA was based off of back then).  Then again they brought it on themselves bringing dreads to a small game a few weeks before.

Fondest memory is playing against my EotBS player in a 750 point land game.  I was not worried about a squad of dive bombers coming in and SCUTTLED my Archimedes in front of a full squad of Skorpios to screen them from oncoming fire (they were 340/750 of my points!) when said squad of dive bombers came in, laughed at my AA rolls, and promptly reminded me that bombs ignore shields.  The resulting crit gave me a magazine explosion, which wiped out 3/4 of the Skorpios with the last Skorpio having a magazine explosion of its own taking out the last of the squad.  This immediately fullfilled his medium/50% orders and game was over in the 2nd or 3rd activation of turn 2.  I laughed shook his hand and said "thank you sir may I have another!".  That is when I realized I loved this game so much that it truly did not matter to me whether I won or lost because I just always have fun playing this game.

The other 4 swung in on the other side and took a potshot at his Battleship, and mag exploded it (wiping out all 4 corvettes.... so much for that boarding action against the dread), which also critted the Enterprise again and teleported it right off the back edge of the table.

Although it would put a much larger load on certain staff/playtesters. (Thinking a 'lead' for each nation, or maybe a couple of factions each). When Delboy/Derek was able to make the different Prussian unit variants public for playtesting - the forum was alive with feedback.

To adress you first issue. Drones are kind of tricky. Not so much because they are unbalanced or its impossible to deal with them but simply because special tactics are needed.

PE is especially weak against drones but not epsecially stong either. One of the tricks is to engage the drones agressively with surface units. Move into AA range to intercept them. This way you reduce their numbers so they can't deal much damage. The second thing is do not wipe squadrons. This is the direcet oposit of how regualr SAS are handeled. Just shoot drones down to one or two tokens and ignore them. Drones are conciderably more effective against single large targets. Lots of smalls and mediums are more difficult to handle for them. The best bet you have as PE is to do what PE does best. Move in quickly. Neutralilse drone squadrons on your way. As usual shoot up smalls and meds as you go. Get into knife fighting range. Tesla anything that still floats and board the hell out of the drone carriers. Its usually more effective to ignore the drone carriers until you are close. Use your firepower to sink or neutralise smaller and more vulurable untis. A sunk cruiser is more worth to you than one point of damage on a large or massive. CoA is pretty vulnurable to boading. Two squadrons of corvettes, frigates or a mixture are a threat even to an undamaged drone carrier. Using SAS against drones can work but its risky. If your opponent launches fighter drones use you ships to reduce their numbers befor they get into a dogfight. Stay close to your own flat tops so your SAS can be replenished every turn if nessecary. Advance in a compact formation so your fighters can protect all ships. Maybe use a flanking force in addition. CAPs can help a lot against torp and dive bomber drones. Your best bet is to get in close as fast as you can though.

For your list... At 850 Pts i think two flat tops is a bit one sided. The Imperium I get. Its a solid unit and good value for its points. But why a Rhine? You sort of lack a damage sponge. The Rhine is a pure long range support vessel. The Imperium is only tough as long as it is obscured. You need somthing that can go right into the fray. I think you need a battleship instead of a second carrier.

The Königsberg is awefully lonely. CBs only are effective if there are other targets distracting from them. The K'berg is a glass cannon. It can dish out massive damage but it will go down once it catches attention. In your setup its the only bigger unit quickly closing in. It sticks out. It will be a prime target.

Why do you use Uhlans? Do you have special plans for the mines?

Same with the Arminius. Why two squadrons? Why not one plus one Saxony. Two Saxonys? Stolz and Arminius? etc?

You have lots of Recon planes but few conventional guns to use IDF. That is simply a wast. Since you have flat tops you might want to use torp bombers first. These will be in range faster and most likely survive an attack run. So they can be replenished and rearmed to come back as dive bombers.

If you are affraid of drones i would strongly advise against Speerwurfs. These are extremly vulnurable against SAS attacks since fighter can shoot at them. Small surface units on the other hand are only vulnurable to dive and torp bombers and most players won't send them against smalls.

iamsimplythejeff reacted to YoungDave in Lord Hood in V2.0, do you still use it?
    Morning guys,

As I said in the last post, got the game in yesterday and I was using 4 Lord Hoods.  Four, I hear you cry - are you nuts?  Well, there was a reason for this, which I'll mention (and see then if any of you want to call me nuts) and then tell you how the game went.  I did debate whether to post this thread, as I could easily run the same game again against one of my other buddies, but hey ho.

My very good buddy got me into D Wars in the summer of 2012; Richard has gotten me into LOTS of gaming systems, and I had resisted D Wars well - don't need to play another game, don't need the expense, you know the usual excuses.  But then he mentioned that the company was bringing out a Russian faction (knowing I have a soft spot for all things Russian - that's another long story).  So, to kill some time until the Russians came out, and to get into the rules, I picked up a Brit fleet.  And Richard was right - I love the game.  And we - and several others from the club - got in many games over the next 2 years.

Then, suddenly and completely unexpectedly, Richard died last July.  Massive heart attack, had an undiagnosed heart condition.  52 years old.  And the family, knowing how close Richard and I was, asked me to do part of the eulogy, and that was tough.  I've done a bit of public speaking in my time, but a eulogy is in a completely different category to a work presentation or after-dinner speech.  So anyway, come the day of the funeral, and I'm ready very early - as you do.  And was needing to kill a bit of time.  So I booted up ebay and there, in the good old listings, were 2 Lord Hoods with a short time left to go before the auctions finished.  So, while I already had 2 Lord Hoods - (which I was very happy with, but had had no intention of buying any more), I put in bids on them both.  And won them both.  On the day of my buddy's funeral.

So I had always wanted to run the 4 Lord Hoods together, but what with all sorts of other things on the go, it didn't happen until yesterday.  And what a game.

It was a 1500 point battle.  It had to be - as I brought all 4 Lord Hoods on as a flanking force.  The look on Iain's face when I put them on the table was priceless; they were coming on on my right flank, and Iain, who was using Ottomans, had a battleship and 3 destroyers on his left flank.  Oh, I should have mentioned that the Lord Hoods arrived on turn 1 - that rocked.  First activation - the battleship has taken a crit.  Iain then spent the rest of turn one trying to get as many storm and clouds around his battleship to save it's skin.  By the end of the turn, it had one hit point left.  At the start of T2 Iain played the TAC card that lets you repair HP damage - I cancelled it.  Another wonderful look on his face.  So after the BB (and destroyers) were sunk, the Lord Hoods just swept down the board sweeping all from their path.  And their losses?  2 HP on a single vessel.  That was it.

The star of my force was the Dreadnought; the amount of dice Iain threw at it was awesome, and it just sailed through it all - it was even winning the duel with Iain's dread.  Also, the 2-dice shields it was handing out to my smalls close by was also hughly helpful.  So to cut a long story short, the Lord Hoods were fantastic, and a massivly enjoyable game.  Which Iain took very well - he was also a mate of Richards, and appreciated the thoughts behind the game.

So if you have any doubts about the Lord Hoods - give them a go.  They absolutely rocked yesterday.  And if I knew how to upload photos to the site, I would.  But I'm afraid I'm just an old luddite

Wonder what 4 Russian battlecruisers would be like?  Now there's a thought.

iamsimplythejeff reacted in Linking Tesla weapons
I am going to overrule James here.
The intention of the wording of Secondary Weapons was to allow Linking/Combining to perform larger attacks WITHIN the remit and spirit of the rules. Firing from banks of Tesla Batteries or Heavy Speerschleuder Turrets in direct concert with the dropping of Tesla/Speerschleuder ordnance from a flying vessel is not what was intended..... and under close inspection of the rules it is illegal in my view.....and since I'm in charge....  kinda ...... I am going to make a ruling.

    Tesla + Speerschleuder Bombs
*Bomb Bays only ever use either Area Bombardment (where permitted) OR Concentrated Bombing (with a sub-use of Linking or Combined Fire Mechanics where applicable)
*Other forms of Tesla/Speerschleuder that are not Bomb Bays obviously may not use Concentrated Bombing.
*Since they cannot execute Concentrated Bombing Attack, they may use standard/link/combine mechanics where applicable, as part of a different attack instead.

In summary, Tesla+Speerscheluder Bombs can link/combine (where permitted) with each other and ONLY with each other.

I hope this clears this up.
I will look to adding it to the errata if problems persist.

    Cheers
    Derek.

From the rule book, Specialized weapon section.

    * Specialized Weaponry may only use firing options with other Specialized Weapons of the same type .

Here, 'type' means of special weapon, otherwise this sentence would be a simple restatement of part of the main rules for firing options, and there would be nothing prohibiting, for instance a (S) Heat lance linking with the (S) turrets and (S) Broadsides found on many French ships.

As that is clearly not correct, 'type' here must refer to the type of special weapon - Tesla, Energy, Heat etc

    Second paragraph...
    * Unlike other weapons, Specialized weaponry is always permitted to use viable firing options with other Specialized Weaponry of the same type, enabling them to perform Firing Options with a combination of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Weapons.

Here we have a  statement the normal linking rules do not apply  - 'Unlike other weapons'. It  then goes on to tell us what rules do apply.

It is both intended and possible that when using specialized weapons, you can link unusual combinations of weapons. We wrote the rules to support unusual combinations of weapons that we might come up from both existing models and in the future.  LinkingTesla  Bombs and Tesla Gunnery weapons is fine.

If we had used the word  'class' or 'Kind' of instead of 'type' here, it would have been  totally unambiguous. As it is I will add this to the FAQ.
