  1. I guess no one is ever going to admit that Ottomans seem to have gotten a raw deal with the current models. Saying "wait and see what's coming" is utter rubbish and I can't believe that no-one from Spartan can see that. Again this could be perceived as Ottomans being the "poor man's choice" in terms of nation favourite. You wouldn't buy a car if the dealer said "don't worry about the indicators, they come out later - until then flap your arms out the window." Further from a player's point of view you should be able to spend funds on models and then expect them to be fun to play with on the table - regardless of what is yet to come - that argument could be used to release anything. With the speed of release from manufacturers (not just Spartan here though) there is little confidence that any promise of models is likely to happen any time soon and so this adds to the frustration and mistrust. You should be able to pick up your box set of whatever and have fun with it..... obviously this is not happening with the Ottomans and so something must be wrong but it seems no one in a position to do something about this is willing to do anything other than say "wait" (see above). I can't believe that a games company sees this as acceptable - they are players as well after all. This is compounded by focus on other nations (like the Chinese) who seem to have escaped such nerfdom fate, have lots of models coming out for them and so forth. Again the Chinese are a minor faction yet seem to be getting major nation attention. How can this not be perceived other than favouritism / focus on them now? What about other nations and their toys? It's just going to cause more aggravation and frustration from those who do not play Chinese. The Zuhafs as escort also sums up the Ottomans at the moment for me. Been said by lots that using them as escorts seems counter to what they were/are for. Mines are naff, the Zuhaf's do little to deter boarders, give little additional firepower or AA/CC... the unnecessary complication and convoluted "figure of 8" movement just to keep them with the parent model is not "fun" but annoying, just slowing the game down for little benefit. Again how did this not get picked up in play testing and something that would cause aggravation? - again look at how many play testers play Ottomans for "fun". Same could be said for the Hisar - its a big expensive (lovely) model to buy so players rightly expect it do be impressive. To go from where it was to now is a shame. I can't see why it was nerfed to such a degree. There is no justification "to bring it in line with other models" as this has not happened for other models - and why does everything in the same "class" need to be comparable? Why can't the Hisar be a potent carrier with the large SAS capacity it had? Even if it was an upgrade? Again, it just adds to the perception that Ottomans, maybe due to their v1.1 over-poweredness, have had too harsh a treatment from the playtesters / design team. I don't see this situation being resolved any time soon unfortunately which will leave those with Ottoman forces disgruntled. On another similar note, a friend of mine who has French has commented that everything in DW seems to be getting equalised - his point was French used to be the nation with pocket battleships rather than the bigger stuff - but now this has crept into other nations - so again nations become more similar rather than unique and distinct. I guess from a developers point of view the more similar stuff is the easier it is to balance and so the quicker it can be bought to market to make money.

You know, I see scores like this and I can't even figure out how it's possible. Not that I won't enjoy the angst in the Dindrenzi superiority thread and give them a hard time about catching the clearly superior Aquans But putting aside the fact that at 1200 points it would have maxed out at +15 and -15, it's REALLY hard to get a result that lopsided. You basically need to have one side wipe out the other without suffering any losses themselves. Even the games I feel like I totally dominated my opponent end up at something like +15 to +3 or something. How are people doing this????

  3. I don't think the issue of proxying should be addressed as part of a universal tournament setup. I think the focus needs to remain missions, scoring, terrain, and list building. Things like proxying are more in the realm of individual TOs to worry about and in the same vein as painting requirements etc.

  4. Yeah I did but thanks for the reminder as sometimes I do forget. Found out it's the paint I was using. The can just had a bad batch of paint mix. It happens from time to time. We'll here is where I am at with the repaint. Blocking out the main colors and will hit details and larger areas with some details and weathering.

  6. The Hasta can be made for boarding just fine. A pair of them can bring 14AP, which is a cheaper option than the extra shield and still brings a lot of pain. You can double down and bring 6 assault boats for even more boarding hilarity. Pair with Thermal Controls and you're cooking. If anything, this is one of the few Lizard ships with a reasonably priced boarding option.

  7. Well guys... We had a very special visitor tonight at the shop (Neil from Spartan...yes!) and he brought along an absolute bucket full of models from Planetfall and basically explained a lot of the mechanics etc. The guy is one of the most humble I've met in the gaming industry (he even gave me a Ba'Kash patrol fleet...) and all I'm going to say is that DZC doesn't have a leg to stand on when you see some of the models coming out. Not sure what I can say so I won't mention anything that hasn't been previewed already but we are in very capable hands and the models are looking unbelievably good.

  8. It's all okay guys, we keep getting cryptic clues from the beta team that maybe someday the ottomans will get new models in the far distant future that we can all buy loads of to make them a possibly competitive list again! All you fools playing Ottomans with the 1.1 models are living in the past, man... It's these new magic models about which we have no proof or evidence that will save us! P.s. Dear Beta team. Stop teasing with giblets of nothing. If you're going to improve the Ottomans, tell us straight. If it isn't going to be until winter 2016 or whenever, tell us so we can consult an accountant and start saving.

  9. The biggest thing I've seen with people trying for 25% coverage is that they aren't keeping any terrain near the board edges. If there is a 4-6" buffer around your terrain at the board edges it will make the interior of the board look really crowded and results in a cluttered >25% coverage at certain parts. Basically if you crowd towards the center you end up with a board that has 50% coverage in the center and 0% on the outside. 25% of the board edges need to be covered as well. Also, I think it looks good when you group terrain slightly, ie putting two asteroid fields down with a space between, or arching a band of gas clouds through the center of the board so it looks like only a handful of pieces of terrain, even though there are more individual pieces. IMO the biggest thing is spreading out the 25% coverage to avoid crowding the board center and putting some terrain pieces near each other for a base theme. For example, how many times have you seen a planetoid touching the board edge or a large Asteroid field in the middle of a Deployment zone up to the board edge forcing a player to either deploy in the asteroid field or outside of it? Very rarely. There is no reason for the board edge to be completely unobstructed, if 25% of the baord edge isn't terrain your 25% coverage isn't evenly distributed. Also, using good terrain, or even high quality images laminated can help a lot.

The forces of House Zarkonnen are finally getting a bit of paint on them. Right now this is my (mostly) placeholder for my work in progress Directorate. Nothing too special but I'm having fun painting up some of the evil...erm...misunderst...erm...who I am kidding - blatantly evil Guild warships of the Directorate. This first test model is the new battleship. An overall improvement in look from the first edition ships (I think the Directorate get the best treatment and improvement with the new v2 models overall). This ship is about 2/3 painted. I've got the Battlecruisers, heavy cruisers and frigate all about the same level of paint. Steps remaining: Finish details of windows and panel lines. Add another layer of highlights to the engines. Figure out how to paint the centre energy dome/thingy (most likely a variation on the engines). Since this was a prototype I've already changed the scheme up a bit for the next model (the BC is the next closest done figure). The centre is a lighter shade overall with slightly finer detailing and the red is layered a bit more to create a great contrast between the three shades used (Scar Red, Ferrari Red, and Light Red Orange). The last picture is to show a bit of different lighting as the natural lighting and camera made it a bit brighter than it looks normally. Thoughts/suggestions on the energy dome are welcome. 11. or hate? For all the TS guys on this board please skip this topic. Or read on...my spies will find out. Anyway, there are times in which I actually find myself agreeing too much with Pok. The other day Pok said that 1000 points "is the devil's work" (or something close to that). And while I think it's a great tournament point value he's kinda right - man is it a pain in the arse to build a list at that PV. I've got several lists running around in my head but here is one that I think I'd like to give a try. Thoughts and opinions welcome. The list is designed to kill one or two key enemy elements and capture at least one other while taking whatever objectives possible. Mekat's FSA & more

Recently finished going through a painting binge. Managed to get a ton of stuff new stuff painted / WIPs completed when going though a couple of slow weeks at work. Photos are pretty bad. Even though I did get a decent camera, I got lazy and used the mobile's Need to still put some detailing on the Liberty, but it's usable for now so I'll fix it up a bit more later. Currently using the same generator drop-in from my old Independence as I doubt I'll ever take the same ones if I use both... The one thing annoying me about the new models is that it's messing with my unit marking scheme (the green and yellow you see on the Princeton's paddlewheels). I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually though. The Princetons have been sitting around half painted for half a year, so it's nice I managed to finish them off. Figures the Boston was the first of the new models I painted. Quite happy with it, though I'll have to boost the glowing yellow generator at the back a bit more. These babies have been sitting the their box even since I bought them. Really like how the colour scheme turned out. Added some small magnets that are strong enough to hold them on their stands. Totally unintentional, but because of how some of the magnets got glued, some of them ended up looking like they're diving/starting a turn. Valley was mostly finished already, but needed work on the engine parts. The New Orleans turned out quite nice, but I think the wing sections looks a bit empty so I might add some markings or something. I couldn't be bothered to do the chains/hooks hanging from the New Orleans, mainly because it'd be a pain to pack away if glued on. Might try magnets at a later date? Savannah was pretty much done, but I added the markings on the decking. I had no idea where I was going with the Freedoms when I started to paint them, so I was surprised when they turned out pretty sweet. Soooo.... in the early days, a friend of mine plays EoBS and was to busy to figure out how to paint his stuff. To help him, I threw together some colours schemes and idea to help him. One of these I kinda fell in love with myself, but was far too time consuming and I could not summon enough motivation to paint his models or start of EoBS fleet myself. Then... the Operation Shadow Hunter box came along... Yeahhhh... it's Pink. I'm dubbing it the Sakura Fleet. Though I suppose it's not quite a fleet until I've painted up the Kaiju and Honshu(s) at least Hmmm was also going to post a shot of some LoIS I haven't posted before, but the photo's terrible so I'll save that for another time.

That is a very cool conversion. It fits really nicely with the RoF visual theme, but also looks nicely different to anything else in the fleet. I also hadn't realised until I looked it up after Jeff B mentioned it, how many design cues Spartan had taken 19th century French naval vessels with the RoF ships: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_battleship_Bouvet%C2'>

  16. I agree that DW is generally great. It's by far the best game I have played for a long time (Malifaux is my other game that I love but that's a completely different genre). Spartan as a company is also generally fab. I would be the first to highly recommend any of the SG games to anyone looking to get into playing. Far better customer support, service, etc Just I used to like my Ottomans.... now not so much. I love the fact that I put a Hisar on the table and the opponent went "ARGH" ......now they laugh.... plus its a big expensive model and I would like to field it again in all it's glory. Opponents used to fear the Ottomans now they ask to play them if they want an easier time.

  21. I think you are being a bit unfair to Spartan, Graeme. Whilst I agree the Ottomans need a little tweaking to bring them in line I do not think that there is a favoritism bias towards the chinese. Just look at the way the releases have gone; 1. 2.0 is released. Core nations get some new boxes. 2. All core nations get their pdfs. 3. All currently available alliance and mercenary nations get their pdfs and the core nation pdfs are tweaked for balance/typo correction. 4. Core nations get aerial boxes. 5. Indian Raj is put up for preorder. 6. Some photos of new stuff is shown on facebook, specifically Canadian, Polish and Chinese models. I am not sure how this can be interpreted as a focus on the chinese. At the very most it shows them on a par with some of the less developed alliance nations in terms of preparedness. I highly doubt it is an accurate showing of everything that is happening at Spartan, or indeed showcasing all the models that are being worked on. For example there have been no pictures of indian raj models on facebook, yet theirs is the next imminent release. On the other hand I suppose you could mean favourites by statline. Yes some of the chinese ships have monstrous statlines, the Zhanmadao certainly stands out here. It has been stated in various threads (in many sections) that this is being looked at and the Zhanmadao is going to tweaked. I do not think it is unreasonable to assume that, given how much chatter is in this thread, the playtesters have reported an issue with the current ottoman lineup in their special playtester forum section (as confirmed by Falconer above). I am sure that this will be taken into account and that the Ottomans will receive a tweak to fix some of the apparent issues. Maybe not as soon as the next pdf drop, but soon I am sure. Of course I could be wrong here and the consensus at Spartan may be that the Ottomans are fine, in which case it is probably beholden to the Ottoman players to find playstyles and tactics that suit the fleet which may not yet be apparent. I am not an Ottoman player, I do not know the fleet on the table very well. I played against it regularly in 1.1 but in 2.0 my main Ottoman opponent has switched to using his other fleets more, on the basis that the Ottomans no longer line up with his expectations. I wonder if this is widespread... Finally, I want to note that saying that future models will fix/improve the fleet is simply unacceptable. The fleet and models currently available must be viable without waiting for other units for 2 reasons. 1. It is a disservice to current players if they have to wait and spend money to make their fleet viable. 2. It implies that whatever models will fix the fleet will be both must-buys and auto-includes, two labels that 2.0 tries very hard to avoid.

    Using the Hasta

You're ignoring the rest of the Hasta to make a point about boarding in general. I'm not paying 310pts for 14AP and 6SRS. I'm paying 310pts for 13AD linked Kinetic out the front, and 16AD broadsides. I'm paying for 6HP with 5/9 and a shield. I'm paying for base 8" movement and 6 SRS slots built in. The only thing bringing 14AP takes away is my ability to bring a second shield. I think the problem with quick launch was already covered, so the big contender is a toss up between AP or shields. When you consider the AP option is literally the cheapest source of AP in the game, it doesn't look so bad in comparison. Paying 5pts for the 3AP is excellent; paying 10pts for 6AP is a steal for all fleets. No other ship can do this. No other tier 1 choice can drop 14AP on a target without sacrificing some significant hardpoints/upgrades and point cost. You can still bring bombers, or fighters, or ceptors, or shuttles. In addition to your excellent firepower, and average survivability, you're bringing 18AD of bombers, and can follow up with 14AP to capture a damaged ship of your choice. I'd hardly call 9 games any sort of grounds to claim boarding isn't a good idea. Its not about making a fleet based around boarding; its about understanding what it can and can't do, and with the Hasta, you're really not sacrificing anything important for those extra AP. In fact, its the cheapest option. I'm also curious why you think the Hasta only works in pairs. Surely you must think the same thing for all the battlecruisers then?

  24. Remember your SAW's don't have to attack. Holding them back in your formation of ships as a threat to enemy units that get themselves to far forward. Those SAW's force your opponent to be more cautious with their units. A 20" strike range with fighters will keep other flyers at RB3/4. I've found that players are not using as many bombers as they used to and other flyers are far rarer than they used to be. I have been playing carrier heavy fleets in testing and found them very effective once you get yourself into the SAW's mindset. Its very much like the US Admirals before WW2, the big gun fleet, which was effectively 1.1 now the carrier generation has arrived and tactics have changed. The big difference is its like the first fleet carriers (converted BB and BC) fast, lots of guns, but those guns were for defence not to get into the main battle line. DW is a bit different in that those carrier can go toe to toe with other units. Make sure that your SAW end their turn within 4' of the carrier before it activates or plan for where your carrier is going to be so that next activation its within 4" Now even if you don't want to run a carrier fleet, always slip an Apollo CVL into your fleet. This forces your opponent to plan for you to change those fighters into strike SAW's or vice a versa. Without this, you lose the ability to confuse your opponent and are forced into a very obvious tactical approach with your SAW's. For example, turn one move your fighters forward 10". Then later in the turn move your carrier 6". Next turn you have two options keep the SAW's as fighters or change them to a strike SAW. That 6CV unit can change two units and that does force your opponent to move far more cautiously. Well lads back to the ready room the enemies in sight.

  31. Yes, I consider the Avenger a good carrier. It has a Guardian generator and strong weapons, it is also faster than the Hisar and uses the large template. And it is a naval model, which can take very good escorts.
    1 point
  32. Thing is, the 2.0 stats basically removed the Hisar as a viable choice from naval battles. No usable escorts and low AA make it an ideal and vulnerable target for boarding. It is awfully slow and its weapons are not that strong as the primaries cannot be fully linked together. Its reduced complement of SAW means it is not worth the points. It costs 245 points with an MCG, plus 90 points for escorts, that is 335 points. I can get two Apollo carriers and either two Sinops, or a Sadrazam, for the same points. Even the vanilla Hisar is 225 points, for which I can get an airfield and a Sinop. Both options seem much more useful to me than the Hisar.
    1 point
  33. These are my ideas on how to "repair" the Ottomans: - MCG range should be 24" - Zuhafs should no longer be escorts and each squadron should allow a minefield, perhaps of four mines - there should be a Mizrak Mk.II escort, without either the broadsides or the volley gun, instead adding +1 Storm Point to the parent vessel. - the Hisar should be given back its original capacity of 12 SAW and 6" Movement

  35. A few notes: If push comes to shove I'd prefer one fixed list over multiple lists (if sideboards are unacceptable). A hybrid system is probably the best - perhaps using win/loss/draw with battlelog being used to place you within the ranking. On everything else we seem pretty much in agreement. In regards to the scenarios I think you are correct in that two seem to be generally easily excepted and the rest need some form of either tweaking or perhaps just community developed ones. Zak

  37. 1000 points I would take - Tier 1: Dread w/ 6 srs, stealth, +3 wing . Total 320. Tier 2: 2x3 Heavy Cruisers Total 540. Tier 3: 2x2 Nidus w/ Interceptors Total 100. Grand Total = 960 I'm sure people are going to ask why, but I always minimise my nidus squads in anything over 800 points. I would happily sacrifice 2 BL points for heavy hitters that have 6 HP and self repair. Relthoza heavy cruisers are some of the best cruisers in the game. You also have the interceptors to help out if the enemy decides to shoot torpedoes at them. Am I disadvantaging myself? No. They basically get used as escorts moving with the Dread. Stealth system with 6 PD cover makes decent torpedo magnets. If they let the hvy cruisers roll in unhurt, you are going to have a field day in RB2. I tend to roll a Tank fleet. This 1000 point list gives you 55 HP with most having self repair. Gives you an extra 40 points to spend on other stuff.

And its nice to come back to so much activity on the forum! So, looking over the Spartan Webstore it looks like the Indian Raj are coming out soon......and....I expect folks will want to hear about them? As ever, it doesn't take much encouragement for me to dribble ad nausea regarding all things Spartan, so I expect I will be able to spill some beans soon (once Neil comes back from holidays!) 41. If the Relthoza player is bringing bombers, stay between 16.5" and 20" away. The bombers can't reach you and you are inside his 20" stealth bubble. It also puts you in his range band 3 which when halved will do little to your ships.

  43. The archives for my stat cards for the 2.0 rulebook units will be going live some time tomorrow. (Sorry that I can't be specific but it's a volunteer operation.) But! I can show you what the cards will look like, and talk about how they changed. Here is an example: Things you might notice: The card looks a lot like the old ones, generally. The layout has changed. The image is on the right and the title text is left justified. This is mostly because you can only dodge the fundamental rules of good graphic design for so long when you have a talented graphic designer in the family. The types, listed under the name, are more formalized now. There are a number of rules which are attached to the specific types used. The squadron size, points cost, and strategic value are all included in smaller font below the types. Auxiliary statistics are familiar (AP, AA, CC, IR). The AP type is listed separately and, as a reminder, the to hit values for that type are listed. These are in the format X/Y where X is the value when boarding aggressively and Y is the value when defending against boarding. The weapons box has 5 entries to handle the fact that units with more than 4 weapon systems are not as unusual as they used to be. The weapon box has Name, Type, RB1 - RB4 AD, Number, and Arc. The Type, Number and Arc values are slightly thinner and grayer to emphasize the AD values, which you will refer to most often. Type (P, S, T) is listed for each weapon because it is more important in 2.0 to know which is which. The number is useful for most weapon systems, but especially for bombs and mines, as many larger ships can drop and/or lay multiples of those types of weapons. Arcs: 90, 180, 270, 360; OS = 180 offset; FC = Fixed Channel; BS = Broadside; B = Bomb (2" range, 360 degree); M = Mine. The MAR section incorporates MARs, munition effects, and generators. As before, mandantory ones are white and options are in yellow. Some models have options which do not fit into those three categories, such as options to upgrade their crew type; these are listed in this box as well. Informational summaries of the effects of MARs are included where possible. Some MARs are really straightforward, like Hunter, so I don't include summaries for them. In some cases I have to exclude summaries because otherwise it makes it difficult to include all the relevant items. In those cases, I preferentially exclude MARs that are common in the fleet and are likely to be described on another card you'll be using. Some abilities, such as Carrier, have handy informational summaries to capture things you might want to reference from the rules. I tried to focus on things that are not necessarily easy to remember but come up often enough that you'll want to have a reference on the card. Generators always specify whether Internal or External, as it is an important distinction in 2.0. Movement, HP, and DR/CR are unchanged. SAS squadrons have a slightly different layout, but it should not be hugely unfamiliar: Of note, I put a summary on each SAS card to remind you of the ranges and base hit values for the three types of engagements that can involve SAS models, and also a reminder that attacks directed at SAS do not explode. I am particularly pleased with the cards for Infantry tokens, which capture all the required statistics (of which there aren't a ton) and use the extra space to present a mini rules cheat sheet of the extra rules that come with Infantry tokens: Everything below the smaller-than-usual MAR box is boiler-plate reminder text that will appear on all infantry cards, reminding you of their MARs, their special rules, the effects of being in cover, and the changes that come into play when they are mechanized. I am myself getting into the land game after many years of just playing naval/air, and I personally found this extremely helpful. The cards for 2.0 will be released in seven archives, one for each faction, each one containing colour cards, printer friendly cards, and transparent cards. Later on I'll release an archive of card backs and some sample variant backgrounds to use with the transparent cards. I'll also be including a transparent .png of the shadow filter that I overlay on top of the national flags to make my stock card backgrounds, in case you want to make something which looks just like the colour card flag backgrounds but using a flag or image other than the ones I use. As always, I'm sure I've inadvertently included a pile of typos, errors, oversights and general screw-ups, so please let me know when you spot them and I'll fix them. Also, there are two land units for which I don't have proper renders for the unit image, so I had to use renders of similar existing land units. Hopefully this will be a short term kludge until I can get proper images. If you read all the way to the end of this post, I salute you, and look forward to your feedback, questions, complaints and vague innuendo.

  44. Well the Terran fleet is painted to a gaming standard. Still plenty to do, but I'm going to get them all to gaming standard first before doing details.
